The Australian National Maritime Museum is seeking an experienced and well organised Senior Financial Accountant to join our Finance team in this ongoing position.

The Senior Financial Accountant is accountable for the timely completion, on a monthly basis, of all the financial transactional requirements for the Museum and the Foundation and the supervision and day to day management of two Finance Officer roles and works closely with the Finance Manager in the preparation of the month end accounts and reporting, both for management and external stakeholders and any annual Statutory reporting and audit functions.
This is a crucial position for supporting and developing junior staff and learning from and working with the Finance Manager.
High level overview of accountabilities:
- Managing all aspects of transactional accounting and month end, including AP/AR, reviewing journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations; leading the finalisation of month end and year end close, and the preparation of variance analysis of monthly financials for both the Museum and Foundation accurately and within timelines.
- Leading and supervising Finance Officers ensuring all accountabilities for AR, AP, Fixed Assets, and Procurement are met.
- Timely and accurately preparing all month end journals, balance sheet reconciliations, and other financial reports including Commonwealth Government reporting.
- Timely and accurately preparing the Museums and Foundations year-end Statutory Accounts, including the interpretation of accounting standards, fixed asset valuation/impairment testing and revenue recognition, and the implementation of Commonwealth Government accounting policies and practices for review by the Finance Manager, and assisting with the external audit and liaising with the ANAO.
- Providing the analysis of revenue, expenditure, and cost efficiency for the museum, and the different divisions, with insightful commentary and commercial insight to support business growth and build better financial understanding and processes.
- Reviewing and updating the schedule of accumulated depreciation and fixed assets done by FA&P, and assisting the Finance Manager and the business to prepare budgets, forward estimates, annual OPEX and CAPEX budgets, rolling forecasts, preparation of the Portfolio Budget Statement (PBS) and the reporting and lodgements into the Central Budget Management System (CBMS).
- Managing compliance obligations and the preparation of tax submissions as required for various Commonwealth government requirements and taxation with the ATO (inc. GST; FBT; PAYG).
Selection Criteria:
- A relevant degree, and having completed, are studying or plan to obtain professional certification.
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience working as a Financial Controller or Assistant Accountant.
- Excellent attention to detail, strong numeracy and literacy skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills (written and verbal) with the ability to collaborate with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
- Experience with managing a team.

Selection for this position will be made on the basis of relative merit which will be assessed against each item of the selection criteria.
