Internships

The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. The internships are awarded to persons studying towards a university degree or who have recently received a degree (see Internship web pages for further details).
The purpose of the programme is:
To provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole;
To benefit the IAEA's programmes through the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.
The duration of an internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.

Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the Agency's activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure and responds to the needs of its Member States related to nuclear safety and nuclear security.
The Division of Nuclear Security (NSNS) is responsible, upon request, for establishing, coordinating and implementing the IAEA's nuclear security programme to protect against, detect and respond to nuclear security events and threats thereof. NSNS comprises four Sections:

• Information Management Section
• Nuclear Security of Materials Outside of Regulatory Control Section
• Nuclear Security of Materials and Facilities Section
• Programme Development and International Cooperation Section

The Programme Development and International Cooperation Section (PDIC) provides support to the overall planning and coordination of the work of the Division including responsibility for and management of the Nuclear Security Fund, the evaluation of results, financial matters; and interaction with and reporting to donors. PDIC assists in the development and promotion of nuclear security through development of IAEA guidance in nuclear security, promotion of relevant international legal instruments and facilitating nuclear security working and advisory groups. The Section assists in capacity building in nuclear security for Member States, coordinating and advising on overall strategy, methodology and evaluation development for the Division's education and training programmes. It coordinates two collaborative Networks for nuclear security education and training, one for nuclear security academic and educational institutions (INSEN) and one for national Nuclear Security Support Centres (NSSCs).

Main Purpose

The main purpose of the internship is to support the work of the Division of Nuclear Security, under the Section Head, Programme Development and International Cooperation Section, while gaining practical work experience in the field of implementation of the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and its Amendment (A/CPPNM), including through the application of the IAEA's Nuclear Security Guidance (NSS) documents.

Functions / Key Results Expected

• Assist Programme Development and International Cooperation Section with activities aimed at assisting member States in implementation of the A/CPPNM, including in the area of criminalization of offences involving nuclear material;
• Research and document background information for criminalisation criteria in relation to the dangerous quantities of nuclear and other radioactive material;
• Assist in activities aimed at review and revision of the relevant NSS recommendations, including keeping the records from and reports of the relevant meetings;
• Identify, analyse and document inconsistencies in relevant terminology data; and
• Provide technical support for the meetings related to the implementation of the A/CPPNM and NSS review.

Qualifications and Experience

• University Degree in criminology or international relations.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to cooperate effectively across organizational boundaries and the ability to establish effective partnerships and working relations in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and competing deadlines.
• Developed organizational abilities. Being a self-starter.
• Strong IT capabilities.
• Understanding of concepts and solutions for data processing

Applicant Eligibility

• Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree.
• Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree.
• Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA's internship programme.
• Good written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) an asset.
• Candidates must attach two signed letters of recommendation to their application.
