Intern, Climate Strategy

WHAT IS THE JOB?
Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s Professional Practice, Standards and Development Department is hiring an engineering/geoscience student on contract for four months starting in September 2024.

Reporting to the Manager, Climate Change and Sustainability Initiatives (a professional engineer), this position will provide strategic support for the development of the organization’s Climate Change Strategy which will outline the internal and external initiatives that Engineers and Geoscientists BC will undertake to implement our Climate Change Action Plan. The strategy development comprises various sub-projects, including an internal greenhouse gas emissions reduction plan, a gap analysis of Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s climate action in its operational and regulatory activities, and an update of our climate position statements. The intern position would also provide support to a Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) funded project, to develop a course advancing a Climate Resiliency Training Program for Building Sector Professionals, in collaboration with the Climate Risk Institute (CRI). Engineers and Geoscientists BC will establish and chair the Course Steering Committee, inviting representatives to oversee the course and assisting in identifying subject matter experts. This position will also provide support to the preparation and delivery of Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s climate change-related continuing education events.

The intern hired through this opportunity would participate in the Climate Change and Sustainability Advisory Group meetings, and the CRI Course Steering Committee, and benefit from learning about steering complex projects and initiatives through collective decision-making. The intern will work with the staff in organizing events and various engagement sessions in relation to this project. The intern will work in a hybrid work environment and will be exposed to the regulatory functions carried out by Engineers and Geoscientists BC. The intern will be required to engage in creative and critical thinking, technical analysis, and strategic problem-solving.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
The Intern, Climate Strategy will assist the Manager, Climate Change and Sustainability and the Climate Strategist with the development of Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s Climate Change Strategy. During their term, the Intern will provide support for all aspects related to developing the strategy, including:

  • assembling, analyzing and interpreting data in relation to climate change, including for developing the organization’s greenhouse gas emissions inventory and reduction solutions;
  • supporting the development of Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s continuing education offerings and practice resources;
  • working with the CRI Course Steering Committee and preparing project updates;
  • carrying out a critical review of Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s operations, policies and practices to provide recommendations on new programs and initiatives; and
  • supporting outreach and consultation related to the development of the Climate Change Strategy.
  • further assignments will be provided to work on other areas of the Climate Change Strategy Development and in support of the Intern’s career goals.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
  • Student in a college or university engineering or geoscience degree program, or a recent graduate;
  • Eligibility for registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC upon graduation;
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have an understanding of climate science as it relates to the practice of professional engineering and professional geoscience.

This role offers a competitive compensation and benefits program including a salary of $22/hour. For contract employees on a short-term contract, we offer:
  • 8% additional pay in lieu of benefits.
  • 10 vacation days per annum (pro-rated based on the length of contract).
  • A flex day program offering additional paid days off (usually alternating Fridays) as a result of a compressed work week.
  • A hybrid work model with an assigned schedule confirming days worked remotely and days worked in-office. This role will be required to work in-office a minimum of 2 days per week during regular business operations.
  • The required tools, equipment, and technology for employees to work remotely are provided.
  • Free parking is available at the office. Transit reimbursement is offered to employees who take transit to work; we are centrally located near bus and Skytrain stops.
