DevOps Engineer (2 positions)

ESS invites applications for two Software Engineer positions at the Data Management and Software Centre (DMSC) in Copenhagen, Denmark. The DMSC is tasked with the mission of assisting users of ESS with all their scientific computing needs. This includes computing hardware, data acquisition, data analysis, modelling and simulation tools for the experiment planning and analysis phases.
About the team
The Software Engineer will be part of the Experiment Control and Data Curation (ECDC) group at DMSC. The team is responsible for producing the tools used by scientists to carry out their cutting-edge experiments, utilising the capabilities of our next generation neutron facility.
The tasks and responsibilities of the team include but are not limited to:
- Building and supporting the whole software data acquisition chain that users will be relying on to carry out their experiments.
- Streamlining the user experience so the scientists can focus on their scientific goals.
- Supporting scientists using ESS with their data acquisition needs.
- Contributing to our CI/CD system to keep improving our software quality.
As the successful candidate you will, together with the team:
- Define, implement and support the Apache Kafka-based data acquisition pipeline.
- Develop and support our CI/CD framework and deployment systems.
- Develop software within the ESS software framework to deliver a system that gives access to the full scientific capabilities of ESS.
- Support visiting scientists and ESS staff in using the whole data acquisition chain and the experiment control framework.
- Collaborate with colleagues within the ESS and other facilities world-wide.
This is a permanent position with three months’ probationary period, and is to be filled as soon as practically possible.
About you
The role requires substantial programming experience in C++ and/or Python. We consider it a bonus if you have experience within some of these areas:
- Collection, processing or analysis of data.
- Data streaming or message broker systems, such as Apache Kafka.
- Building, testing and deploying software using CI/CD tools.
- Ability to work efficiently on Linux operating systems.
