Diesel Shop Lead

Amentum is actively seeking a Diesel Shop Lead for International Fleet Support under the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) PMS 326 Follow-On Technical Support (FOTS) contract. The work location will be at the Egyptian Naval Base in the port of Alexandria, Egypt. This position includes a competitive benefits package.
Essential responsibilities and daily duties include:

Conduct system start-up and performance testing to ensure proper functioning before full-scale operations.

Perform regular engine performance tests and diagnostics to identify potential issues before they lead to failure, ensuring engines are always ready for deployment.

Plan and execute major engine overhauls and rebuilds, working closely with ship engineers and outside vendors to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.

Manage day-to-day shop operations, including work scheduling, parts inventory, and tool management, ensuring the shop runs efficiently.

Lead a team of diesel mechanics and technicians, providing guidance on complex repairs, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance procedures.

Oversee the repair, maintenance, and overhaul of diesel engines aboard naval surface ships, ensuring that all work is performed to NAVSEA and military standards.

Proven ability to lead a team of diesel mechanics, technicians, and apprentices, delegating tasks efficiently and ensuring quality control.
-
Oversee daily shop operations, scheduling, and manpower allocation to ensure projects are completed on time and to standards.

Responsible for training and mentoring junior diesel mechanics, providing hands-on instruction in maintenance, troubleshooting, and safety protocols.

Ensure that all team members are up to date on the latest techniques, tools, and technologies in diesel engine maintenance.

Make critical decisions regarding engine repairs or replacements, especially in time-sensitive situations aboard naval vessels.
-
Plan and execute major engine repairs, overhauls, and replacements, including coordinating with other departments (e.g., electrical, plumbing) and outside vendors.
-
Track project progress and manage parts inventory, ensuring necessary tools and parts are on hand for repair and maintenance tasks.

Provide timely and comprehensive inputs for the Monthly Status Report.
Minimum Requirements
-
High School diploma or GED.
-
7 years of experience working with diesel engines, particularly marine diesel engines used aboard naval surface ships.
-
3 years of leadership or supervisory experience in a diesel shop, marine maintenance facility, or similar environment.
-
Ability to solve problems and address unexpected engine issues, system malfunctions, or parts shortages.
-
Working knowledge with naval diesel engines, including high-power engines used for propulsion, auxiliary power, and ship systems.
-
Working knowledge of various types of marine diesel engines used on naval surface ships, such as main propulsion engines, diesel generators, and auxiliary engines.
-
Working knowledge of both two-stroke and four-stroke engines, as well as turbocharged and naturally aspirated systems.
-
Working knowledge of marine diesel fuel injection systems, including common shipboard fuel systems, unit injectors, and fuel pumps.
-
Working knowledge of diesel engine cooling systems, including seawater and freshwater cooling loops, heat exchangers, and coolant pumps.
-
Ability to troubleshoot and maintain cooling systems to prevent overheating and ensure optimal engine performance.
-
Working experience maintaining lubrication systems, including oil pumps, filters, and coolers for high-power marine diesel engines.
-
Ability to monitor and analyze engine oil to identify signs of wear, contamination, or system malfunction.
-
Familiarity with diesel engine exhaust systems, including turbochargers, after coolers, and exhaust manifolds.
-
Working experience in performing preventive maintenance, routine inspections, and major overhauls on marine diesel engines.
-
Ability to disassemble, repair, and reassemble engine components, including pistons, cylinder heads, crankshafts, and valve trains.
-
Proficiency in performing top-end and bottom-end overhauls, as well as in-frame and out-of-frame repairs.
-
Ability to apply diagnostic skills using engine diagnostic tools, compression testers, and engine analyzers to identify mechanical, electrical, and performance issues.
-
Expertise in troubleshooting diesel engine failures, including fuel system issues, compression loss, turbocharger failure, and cooling system malfunctions.
-
Knowledge of engine control systems, including engine management systems (EMS), start/stop systems, and engine diagnostics software.
-
Working knowledge of how diesel engines integrate with shipboard electrical systems, including generators, and automation controls.
-
Working experience in diagnosing and repairing turbocharger issues, such as oil leaks, boost pressure problems, and turbine damage.
-
Working experience in troubleshooting and maintaining fuel filtration systems, fuel injectors, and fuel pumps to ensure proper engine performance.
-
Working experience in running engine load tests and performance evaluations using dynamometers or shipboard testing equipment.
-
Ability to calibrate fuel injectors, adjust valve clearances, and fine-tune engine performance to meet operational requirements.
-
Familiarity with NAVSEA standards and maintenance procedures for naval surface ships, ensuring all engine work meets military specifications and safety requirements.
-
Working knowledge of environmental regulations related to diesel engine emissions, fuel systems, and oily water separation aboard ships.
-
Ability to ensure compliance with IMO Tier II or III standards for marine diesel engines where applicable.
-
Working knowledge of shipboard safety protocols, including lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, confined space entry, and fire safety when working with diesel engines and fuel systems.
-
Ability to ensure all team members follow safety regulations and always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
-
Ability to communicate well skills for interacting with naval officers, engineers, and shipyard personnel to ensure smooth coordination of repairs and maintenance tasks.
-
Ability to provide key attention to detail when performing inspections, adjustments, and repairs on critical diesel engine components.
-
Ability to motivate and lead a team in a high-pressure environment, particularly during emergency repairs or ship deployments.
-
Ability to work in confined spaces aboard naval vessels, such as engine rooms and mechanical spaces.
-
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy engine parts and tools.
-
Ability to work in hot or noisy environments typical of diesel engine rooms aboard ships.
-
Ability to obtain a Country Clearance and Base Pass authorization.
-
Possess a current passport at least two years before expiration after arrival in Egypt.
-
Ability to travel CONUS and OCONUS.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Propulsion Systems Integration: Knowledge of how diesel engines integrate with ship propulsion systems, including gearboxes, shafts, and propellers.
-
Technical or vocational training in diesel engine repair, marine diesel mechanics, or mechanical engineering.
-
Certifications such as Marine Diesel Technician, ASE Diesel Certification, or OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) certifications for diesel engines (e.g., Caterpillar, MTU, or Detroit Diesel).

Hybrid Diesel-Electric Systems: Experience working with newer diesel-electric propulsion systems or hybrid systems that combine diesel engines with electric motors for improved efficiency.

Experience working in an Arab country for long periods.
