About the position

We are now looking for a DOCTORAL RESEARCHER in “computational fluid dynamics design of fuel cells operated on e-fuels”. There is also an opportunity to start this position as a research assistant before finishing master’s degree.

The research will be carried out at Aalto University’s Energy Conversion and System research group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In this position you will have a chance to make an impact on design of fuel cells which could be operated on various e-fuels including ammonia/hydrogen blends.

You will model and design a solid oxide fuel cell using advanced computational fluid dynamics modeling methods i.e. direct numerical simulations (DNS). The reactive flow simulation methods can be used in various other applications as well. The detailed physics and chemistry of the designed 3D computational model is validated and the model is used to give design guidelines for a sustainable process design.

Your work in this research project will consist of computational work to find proper simulation models for the underlying setup. This work is part of an ongoing multidisciplinary project on ammonia/hydrogen energy conversion and you will be able to interact with other computational researchers working on various other applications as well (hydrogen/ammonia combustion in burners/engines, ammonia cracking, heat transfer etc). As part of your doctoral duties, you will also gain experience on teaching and instructing students.

Your experience and ambitions

We are looking for a passionate person that would have the following skills.

Essential:

Master’s degree in physics, mechanical, or aerospace engineering, or a closely related field.
Strong interest in physics, modeling, and simulation.
Experience in e.g. Matlab/Python/C++ programming.
Basic knowledge in CFD.
Demonstrated academic excellence in previous studies.
Excellent presentation skills.
Fluency in English is required.

Beneficial:

Knowledge on data analysis tools.
Knowledge on Open FOAM/CAD/mesh generation tools.

What we offer

The salary of a starting Doctoral researcher is currently 2720 € / month (gross), increasing as milestones for the Ph D are achieved (highest Ph D researcher level is currently 3403 €/month). The annual workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is currently 1612 hours. The employment contract includes occupational health care, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The employment relationship is full-time, fixed-term employment at Aalto University. The first contract is made for 2 years, with a 2-year extension after passing the midterm review. The doctoral candidate will be expected to contribute also to teaching (max 20% of her/his time).
