WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER
Our new Germany Partnerships and Policy Lead will drive the development and implementation of engagement strategies with priority public sector ministries and agencies in Germany (e.g. BMUV, BMZ, BMWK, AA, GIZ and others), in line with our Europe policy and institutional partnerships strategy and 2030 goals.
She/he/they will play an instrumental role leading the identification and cultivation of public partnership opportunities for TNC, supporting teams across TNC to access German public funding to deliver international climate mitigation and adaptation and nature conservation programmes. They will lead as liaison and informational contact in Europe between The Nature Conservancy and the bilateral and multilateral public sector entities at the German national, sub-national or local levels, as well as with industry and/or private groups for the purpose of supporting TNC’s policy and public funding goals.
Our Germany Partnerships and Policy Lead will play an instrumental role within a wider, dynamic team of professionals working together to deliver public funding outcomes needed for highly impactful, equitable conservation projects around the world that benefit people, nature and climate goals, including across Africa, Latin America, Asia Pacific and the Caribbean. They will sometimes support public partnership opportunities with other European countries, if and when necessary, such as Switzerland, The Netherlands or Nordics countries. They will typically have at least one direct report, supervising and coaching one of our Public Funding Managers (Germany, Nordics).
Our Germany Partnerships and Policy Lead will identify impactful and timely policy engagement opportunities, collaborating with policy leads within the wider team to build a strong network of relationships and position TNC as a trusted adviser to policymakers within Germany in support of our policy goals. S/he/they will work on transformative policies across a range of topics designed to help tackle climate change, protect nature and biodiversity, provide food and water sustainably, and deliver innovative, sustainable financing in support of these outcomes and TNC’s wider equitable conservation agenda globally. This will include engaging with the German government in international processes, such as the UNFCCC and UNCBD.
She/he/they will report to the Europe Director Global Policy and Institutional Partnerships. The location for this position is Berlin, Germany. No relocation or immigration assistance can be offered with this position.
WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU
You will bring in-depth knowledge and understanding of the relevant policy contexts in Berlin across a range of topics in support of TNC’s priority goals. You will possess strong networks across relevant stakeholders, including German ministries and public sector agencies.
You will be able to confidently develop and manage TNC’s engagement programme in Germany with relevant public sector partners. You will lead on creating a clear and effective engagement plan, track its implementation and undertake research and policy analysis, when needed, in support of our public partnerships and policy goals, positioning TNC as a trusted partner on international climate and biodiversity policy and programming. You will lead on the preparation of relevant programme materials to support effective engagements with German public sector stakeholders, such as policy consultation submissions, letters, policy briefs and other communications.
You will act as an ambassador for TNC with key government agencies and public funding organisations as well as other stakeholders. You will develop strategic partnerships with additional stakeholders (e.g. NGOs, academia, business) and engage with priority coalitions and working groups.
You will be able to identify and prioritise opportunities for accessing and mobilising funding to help meet our public fundraising goals. You will have a good understanding of Germany’s policy and public funding agenda, and l enjoy managing relationships with our public sector partners, being attuned to their needs, and regularly refreshing our understanding of how TNC can best serve as an effective implementing partner to help execute their conservation goals.
You are someone who thrives as a team player and enjoys working closely with others, in Europe as well as in other regions and global teams. You are a thoughtful leader and capable supervisor, with strong skills and desire to coach, develop and motivate others. WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- Bachelor’s degree or other relevant professional qualification in related field and a minimum 5 years’ related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience collaborating proficiently with German public sector stakeholders (e.g. BMZ, BMUV, AA, BMWK etc.)
- Experience identifying opportunities for policy engagement in Germany and identification of policy levers.
- Experience identifying and accessing public funding opportunities in Germany.
- Experience in writing and editing, particularly in developing policy or public funding proposal materials
- Experience in researching policy, critical analysis, and evaluating information from divergent sources and compiling it into cohesive reports.
- Proven presenting skills and strong communication abilities; experience in engaging effectively and sensitively in complex negotiations
- Experience supervising, coaching and delivering through others.
- Experience implementing and managing multiple complex projects, on time and to agreed budgets.
- Fluency in German and English.
- Experience with client management databases and tracking tools.
- Experience researching information from divergent sources and compiling it into a cohesive reporting structure.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in a relevant field related to public policy, business, sustainability, or public fundraising or experience, coursework, or other training in business, sustainability or fundraising
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural experience highly valued
- Familiarity with wider European-based public funding agencies
- Experience coordinating complex projects in a decentralized organization, working across teams, operating units and functions to achieve optimal results
- Experience building coalitions, and strong networks
- Experience negotiating complex agreements and contracts
- Familiarity with communication technologies and best practices
- Knowledge and application of current and evolving trends in international policy and public funding
- Experience in leading or managing a proposal development team
