This is a fixed term-position for 3 years with a possible extension for 3 more years (qualification position according to § 65 HHG in connection with §2 Abs. 1.2 Wiss Zeit VG). Acquisition of the degree of Habilitation is possible. The successful candidate will work in a dynamic and creative team with timely and modern scientific infrastructure. An active participation in the group’s current research activities as well as the development of an independent scientific profile will be expected. The possibiliy to utilize and develop our currently available research infrastructure will be given.

Your Tasks:

• Development of own research profile with the aim of Habilitation in the realm of nanostructured magnetic thin film systems, preferred in the area of magnetic phenomena in 3D magnetic objects (properties of magnetic layer systems on topographically non-planar surfaces) and their application in transport experiments within quiescent liquids
• Scientific support of the research of the Thin Film Magnetism subgroup:
• Experimental and theoretical work on the scientific challenges in the subgroup “Thin Film Magnetism”, independent preparation of manuscripts for publications
• Initiating and proposing of third-party funded projects and participation in the project administration
• Maintenance and development of the scientific infrastructure of the research group
• Continuous screening and analysis of scientific literature
• Support of the research group’s teaching duties: Organization, preparation and teaching of courses within the area of the research group of up to 4 semester hours per week
• Supervision of Bachelor, Master or Ph D candidates in the subgroup “Thin Film Magnetism” of the Experimental Physics IV team
• Assistance with administrative tasks, guidance/instruction of student assistants, assistance with group organization and procurement tasks

Requirements:

• Completed course of academic study and Ph D in Experimental Physics, with substantial publication activity in peer-reviewed scientific journals, preferably with a high impact factor, related to one or more research fields in physics relevant to this position, including at least one first-authorship. The required qualifications must be available by the recruitment date at the latest
• Very good expertise in one or more fields relevant to the group, particularly magnetically functionalized 3D objects and their controlled actuation in a liquid environment
• Experience in setting up and operating physical high technology. This specifically includes experience with deposition techniques, high vacuum technology, clean room technology, magnetic characterization of thin film/nanostructure materials as well as anisotropic magnetic objects, and optical microscopy investigations of miniaturized lab-on-a-chip systems
• Teaching and science managing experience, experience with supervision of students
• Very good knowledge of English as well as fluency in writing in English
• Eagerness for advancing your scientific education in theory and practice

Desired qualifications:

• Experienced in: Magneto-optical characterization methods (L-MOKE, Kerr microscopy), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), PVD layer deposition techniques for magnetic layers (thermal, sputtering), multi-physics modeling, Python programming, cleanroom lithography (e-beam & optical, 2-photon polymerization)
• Experience in the experimental realization and modeling of the directed transport of magnetic particles in customized stray field landscapes
• Experience in the production of in-plane magnetized exchange-bias layer systems and their application for the functionalization of anisotropic objects
• Experience in software development for controlling and data logging of experimental set-ups
• International research experience with a substantial stay abroad
