Galway City Council is the Local Authority for the city and is surrounded by the administrative area of Galway County Council. It is the fourth most populous urban area in the Republic of Ireland and the sixth most populous city in the island of Ireland.

Galway City Council provides a range of services to its citizens including community & leisure facilities, housing, planning, environmental services, maintenance, water, transportation routes, and business support. There are also internal services including Finance, IT, HR and Corporate Services. The Council is increasingly exploring new and innovative ways to tackle its challenges and deliver services while meeting citizens’ service expectations, achieving efficiencies and continuing to meet the demand for increased accountability.

The Finance Department deals with the short and long-term financing of the Council’s operations, both of revenue and a capital nature. It has a key role in leading and managing an effective and responsive financial service to support service delivery.

The Council’s revenue budget for 2024 is €121m, which provides for operational activities and is funded through rates, government grants and service charges. In addition, the three-year Capital programme 2024 to 2026 amounts to €1.4bn and provides for the delivery of planned infrastructure.

An opportunity now exists in Galway City Council for the position of Financial Management Accountant.

The position is a senior position within the Finance function reporting to the Director of Finance. The successful candidate will be responsible for modernising and managing change in the Finance function. They will be responsible for introduction of new initiatives, policies and procedures and working with multidisciplinary teams. The successful candidate will work in a dynamic and progressive local authority which provides a multiplicity of services to Galway City.
