About Us:
John Paul Adult Services based in Ballybane and Knocknacarra provides a combination of campus and community based services to adults with varying support needs, based on personal outcome measures. Our services are currently undergoing a transition from a campus based service to community living, where we aim to create opportunities for the people we support to be valued citizens in their communities and to have everyday life experiences.

The Role:
The role of support worker is to assist the people who use our service to meet their day to day needs, reach their full potential, promote independence and to be an active part of their the local community. We support them to further their education (both internal and external to the Service) and to build their independent living skills if this is their choice. A major focus of the Support Worker role is to assist and support people who use the Service with development of their own Individual Plan and supporting them to achieve their own Personal Outcome goals. The Support Worker is also responsible for all aspects of personal care which includes supporting individuals with their meals, personal hygiene and other related aspects of physical well-being as required by the individual.

Team Leader/Senior Staff/Team Manager/Service Coordinator/Area Manager

Qualifications/Experience/Skills:
Candidates must have a good general education. A recognised qualification appropriate to the Field of intellectual disability is an advantage. QQI Level 5 or higher is desirable.
 A minimum of one years’ experience of working with individuals with an Intellectual Disability is desirable, full training will be provided.
 The candidate should have knowledge of person-centred planning.
 A full clean manual Driving Licence, which qualifies you to drive manual transmission vehicles on Irish Roads and use of your own car is an essential requirement. It may be necessary for the appointee to obtain a Class D1 Driving Licence (if not already in possession of one). Assistance will be given towards this purpose of obtaining a class D1 licence, should it be required.
Fluency in verbal and written English is an essential requirement of this post.
 To be able to demonstrate flexibility, communication and team working skills together with an enthusiasm for the post.

Working Hours:
Full-time hours are 78 hours a fortnight/part-time hours will vary. All posts are rostered over a 14 day/night duty roster. There may be a requirement for Support Workers to work days, waking night duty, weekends, split duty hours, bank holidays, and sleepovers to meet service needs.

The Brothers of Charity model of service is based on Personal Outcome Measures requiring employees to be flexible in their working hours in order to ensure the provision of high quality services for each individual.

Annual Leave:
22 days per annum.

Remuneration:
Department of Health Care Assistant salary scale - €31,880 x 11 increments - €44,248 (Max) pro
rata per annum. Long Service Increment (LSI) €45,034 pro rata per annum is payable after 3 years on the maximum of the scale. Additional payments will be made for weekends, public holidays and night duty when worked.

Tenure:
These posts are permanent/temporary and pensionable.

Probation:
A probationary period of nine months from the date of appointment applies to the post. Employment may be terminated at any time during the probationary period should the employer find that the appointee is unsuitable to continue employment. The probation period may be extended at the Employer’s discretion.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Brothers of Charity model of service is based on Personal Outcome Measures requiring employees to be flexible both in their approach and their working hours to ensure the provision of high quality services for each individual.

Specific Conditions
 Staff must have a positive attitude towards working with persons with an intellectual disability and help to ensure that they lead as normal and enjoyable a life as possible.
 Staff must treat each person with an intellectual disability as an individual and at all times acknowledge and respect the rights and personal dignity of the person with an intellectual disability.
 Staff are required to establish and maintain relationships with adults with disabilities that are based on respect and equality and that promote their independence.
 Staff should have a good sense of humour and fulfil their role in a friendly, respectful manner.

Main duties, functions and responsibilities:

Team Member and Relationships:
 Be an active member of the Services Team.
 Develop and foster good relationships with people supported by the service and their families.
Be a nominated keyworker, when required, within the service and ensure all personal documentation relating to each person supported is accurately maintained.
Co-operate on all aspects of programmes with fellow staff and Multidisciplinary team members.
 Assist with the development and implementation of specific programmes for people designed to meet the needs of individuals.
 Support individuals to develop their own skills to maximise their independence.
Develop a good working relationship with families and key people involved with the people who use the service, as appropriate.
 When required, take responsibility for the administration, storage, stock and administration of medications in accordance with the policy of the Service.
 Contribute to the team in the development and co-ordination of activities to ensure that each person supported has an individualised outcome focused service. In Day Services this must be carried out in line with the National Interim New Directions Standards.
Support and facilitate individuals in community participation & integration.
 Keep appropriate records in line regulatory requirements,
Work collaboratively and communicate openly with MDT staff, Team Leader/Manager etc.
 Actively participate in ensuring compliance with HIQA standards, and that service delivery is in line with organisational policies.
 Assist with and carry out household cleaning, cooking meals, laundry and shopping.

Health, Safety and Hygiene:
Participate in assisting people who use the Service with personal care and encourage independence.
 Assist with individual exercise and physiotherapy plans as directed.
 Ensure that a high standard of cleanliness is maintained according to the service’s Infection Prevention & Control policy.
 Assist in maintaining a pleasant décor in the house/centre and refresh where appropriate.
Be aware of and become familiar with procedures to be followed in the event of a fire, i.e. fire detection, evacuation and fire fighting.
 Be conscious of Health & Safety matters in the workplace and in particular, comply with employees’ obligations as set out under Chapter 2 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005.
Ensure that all accidents/incidents to people supported, staff and visitors are reported promptly via the AIRS Database.
Undertake all training identified, including the Safe Administration of Medication
 Administer medication in line with the Brothers of Charity Medication Policy.

Personal Outcomes:
 Undertake the mandatory Personal Outcomes Training when scheduled.
 Ensure that the support of all people who use the Service is of the highest professional standard.
 Ensure that the Individual Personal Outcomes Plan and Key Worker system is actively practiced.
 Assist people supported in making informed decisions.
Assist people supported with personal banking and adhering to the National Guidelines on managing individual finances.
 Assist people supported in achieving their personal goals and choices.
 Facilitate feedback reports at individual plan meetings.
 Participation in leisurely activities for example swimming, is an essential component of the post.
 Participating and facilitating attendance of social events, holidays and breaks away for people supported is an essential requirement of the post.
 Be an active participant in Team Planning, including taking on roles that are assigned to you.

General:
 Be aware of the Brothers of Charity Services Ireland’s policies, procedures and guidelines and operate within these in all aspects of your work.
 Ensure strict confidentiality in all matters concerning people supported, including the safe storage of reports and records.
 Comply with all national regulations and standards as set down by HIQA and New Directions.
 Contribute to the maintenance of all databases associated with the Services.
 Adhere to best practice in all aspects of your work.
 Assist with escorting people supported while travelling on buses etc., as required by each individual.
 Drive the service vehicle in order to meet the needs of the people supported.
 Be responsible for the purchase of consumable and other goods, e.g. provisions, cleaning and washing materials etc., and record purchases accurately as required.
 Attend and participate in training as required by the service
Promote dignity at work and show respect to people supported, colleagues and other stakeholders at all times in the course of your duty.
 Perform such other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned from time to time by the Team Leader/ Service Coordinator/Area Manager. All duties must be carried out in person at all times.

The role of the post holder will not be limited by reference to this job description. It would be expected that the role will evolve as professional, structural and people who use the Service demands. The post holder will be expected to think and work flexibly to facilitate this.
