Johnson & Johnson is currently seeking a Principal Scientist to join our dynamic Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT) Lab located in Leiden, the Netherlands. The MSAT Lab operates within the Large Molecule Drug Substance (LM DS) platform, which is a segment of the global MSAT organization. As we work to enhance MSAT capabilities to fully own our current and future commercial products, we are establishing a dedicated MSAT LM DS Lab specializing in Large Molecules (m Abs, complex glycoproteins, bi- & tri-specifics). This lab will house small-scale equipment including 2-10 L bioreactors (fed-batch and continuous perfusion), downstream processing and process analytical lab equipment.
The MSAT Lab will support Life Cycle Management of commercial products and Secondary Technology Transfers. Our lab will conduct satellite runs in Leiden and for EU & Row address complex investigations, process improvements, and serve as a non-routine sample hub. You will lead a team of passionate scientists, providing technical guidance and mentorship, and ensuring the highest scientific standards are upheld.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership & Team Management:- Lead and mentor a team of Senior Associate Scientists and Scientists, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment that encourages professional growth and development.
- Effectively delegate tasks and provide clear direction to ensure smooth and efficient project execution.
- Foster a culture of scientific excellence and innovation within the team.
- Scientific Expertise & Project Management:- Provide strategic scientific leadership and technical expertise in all aspects of large molecule drug substance life cycle management.
- Oversee the design, execution, and analysis of process investigations and studies, ensuring adherence to regulatory guidelines and best practices.
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting of scientific data and findings to stakeholders.
- Collaboration & Communication:- Collaborate effectively with global stakeholders, including project teams, site and global Technical Owners, ensuring seamless integration and communication of scientific findings.
- Represent the MSAT LM DS Lab at internal and external meetings, effectively communicating scientific data and insights.
Qualifications
- Educational Background:
- Ph D in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience:
- Minimum 8 years of experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, with a focus on large molecule drug substance development.
- Proven track record of leading and mentoring scientific teams.
- Technical Skills:
- Strong expertise in biologics manufacturing processes, including upstream and downstream processing.
- In-depth knowledge of experimental design, scale-up, and technology transfer.
- Familiarity with regulatory guidelines and good manufacturing practices (GMP).
- Communication & Leadership:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with team members and stakeholders.
- Proven ability to lead and inspire others, creating a positive and productive work environment.
- Problem-Solving & Analytical Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex scientific and technical challenges independently and within a team setting.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to critically evaluate data and draw sound conclusions.
