National Advisor Hazardous Substances – Wellington – Permanent

The National Advisor ensures FENZ builds & maintains a structured, effective, & well-coordinated approach to managing hazardous substance emergencies.

Mō tēnei tūranga - About the role:

The National Advisor Hazardous Substances is responsible for providing clear advice and information for Fire and Emergency New Zealand in dealing with hazardous substances. The position works closely with internal and external stakeholders, leads planning and risk analysis, and provides advice regarding training, investigations, storage, and use of hazardous substances by industry. This position is based in National Headquarters in Wellington and reports to the Specialist Response Manager.

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Providing authoritative hazardous substance advice, in creation of our Doctrine, Policies, and Procedures relating to Hazardous substance response and management, including decontamination of people and equipment.
  • During responses (as required) fulfil the role of Scientific Advisor in our National Coordination Centre.
  • Liaising with the Training Programmes and NTC Manager, to identify gaps and to support hazardous substance training as appropriate.

In this role, you will develop and maintain strong collaborative and effective working relationships and communication with key internal and external stakeholders including but not limited to related Government Departments, Police, NZDF, NEMA, and Work Safe.

You will also undertake national hazardous materials projects that assist in reducing the incidence and consequence of fire and improving our response to hazardous substance emergencies.

To be successful in this role, we’d expect you will:
  • Have substantial technical and practical knowledge and experience in chemistry and/or chemical engineering.
  • Know your emergency management environment.
  • Ensure national consistency and adherence to national procedures and standards.
  • Hold a tertiary qualification in Hazardous Substances
  • Demonstrate the ability to advise managers on current best practices.
  • Demonstrate the ability to convey information and ideas clearly and accurately, in a way that meets the needs of the audience.

The salary range for this role is $134,190 – $149,100, dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
