Te āheinga - The opportunity
At New Plymouth District Council, we are committed to fostering strong and respectful relationships with iwi, hapū, and Māori communities. Our Iwi Relationships Team plays a pivotal role in achieving this goal, and we are seeking a dedicated and passionate Pou Akonga to join us for a six month fixed-term contract to cover parental leave.
As Pou Akonga, you will play a pivotal role in raising the knowledge and understanding of Te Ao Māori across the Council. You will be responsible for providing learning and development opportunities to officers and management, enabling them to deliver on the Te Tiriti Partnerships Strategy. Your work will empower our teams to value cultural heritage and its impact on our district, enhancing our collaboration with iwi and the wider community.
Tino takohanga - Key responsibilities:

  • Identify the range of modules and training programmes that will be implemented across Council to raise cultural competency across the organisation
  • Direct and lead the development of content for Te Ao Māori learning modules and training programmes that achieve the Critical Training components identified in the Tiriti Partnerships Strategy
  • Be a champion and engage NPDC staff and leaders to empower them to embrace Te Reo Māori me ona tikanga
  • Develop and implement initiatives to increase diversity and cross-cultural competency to create and foster an open and inclusive environment
  • Actively ensure that legislative requirements and Council policies and procedures are fulfilled, particularly in relation to all key relevant legislation
  • Provide coaching to leaders to develop their ability to lead in the areas of diversity and inclusion
  • Identify and advise people and Wellbeing staff on processes or policies which need to be addressed to ensure our organisation attracts a diversity of staff with a focus on Māori
  • Actively contribute to People and Performance teams organisational approach to focus on Te Ao Māori and implementation of Te Tirit Partnerships Strategy of Recruiting for the Vision
Ngā tino pūkenga me ngā wheako - Essential skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated experience as an Organisation Development professional with a track record of providing well founded and best practice advice
  • Experience in learning and development and a good understanding of cultural competency, diversity and inclusion
  • Degree of fluency to meet the needs of the role and understanding of Taranaki tikanga
  • Good understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi at a national and regional level and responsibilities in a local government conte
  • Ability to influence and collaborate with leaders

Ōu mātou rourou - What we offer

You can expect to start in this six-month fixed-term, full-time role with us between $100,329 and $108,131 pro rata.
