Job Summary:
The Legal officer plays a critical role in managing the legal affairs of Retail stores with a particular focus on commercial law. The candidate responsible for ensuring that the stores operate in compliance with relevant laws, provide legal advice to various departments, draft contracts and support in mitigating risks associated with commercial transactions, vendor agreements, and consumer related legal matters.
Responsibilities:
Contract management: Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial contracts including vendor agreements, supply chain contracts, lease agreements, and service contracts. Ensure that all contracts are legally sound and align with company’s interests and commercial objectives.
Compliance and regulatory oversight: Monitor compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies relating to commercial activities. Ensure adherence to consumer protection laws, data privacy regulations, competition law and advertising standards.
Legal advisory: Provide legal guidance and counsel to management and various departments (e.g., procurement, finance, HR) on matters related to commercial law. Advise on legal risks related to business operations, including employment matters, consumer complaints, and IP infringement.
Dispute resolutions & litigation management: handle pre-litigation and litigation matters, including managing external counsel where necessary. Resolve legal disputes and manage consumer complaints or commercial disputes involving vendors or suppliers.
Risk management: Conduct legal risk assessments related to commercial transactions and retail operations. Develop strategies to minimize legal risks and ensure business continuity.
Policy development: Assist in the development and implementation of legal policies, procedures, and standard operating guidelines to ensure legal compliance. Keep updated on legal developments and translate them into practical actions and policies for the business.
Job Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Law (LL.B) or equivalent. Master’s in commercial law is an advantage
Admitted to practice law in Nigeria
5 years’ post qualification experience in commercial law preferably in Retail, FMCG or related industries.
Strong understanding of retail-specific legal issues such consumer protection, competition law, advertising standards and employment law.
Excellent drafting and negotiation skills
Proven ability to manage litigation and external counsel.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to provide clear legal advice to non-legal stakeholders.
Attention to details and excellent organizational skills.
Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced retail environment.
