Path Care Vermaak is a partnership of pathologists in private practice across South Africa that has been assisting doctors and healthcare
professionals determine and confirm diagnoses since 1922. We are registered with the HPCSA (Health Professions Council of South
Africa) and all our laboratories are SANAS accredited.

An opportunity exists for a Reference Laboratory Manager to join the team at our Eugene Marais laboratory branch in Pretoria. We
are seeking an experienced individual with a proven track record of overseeing and managing a team of technical staff within a high
pressurised environment and whose personal impact includes assisting local management with the successful execution of the
business strategy and the achievement of medical and business outcomes. This individual’s track record must include motivating and
engaging employees, responding to service delivery needs within this location and positively interacting with stakeholders at all levels.

The successful candidate should consistently align with as well as achieve and embody the Path Care purpose and values.


  • National diploma/degree as a Medical Technologist/Medical
Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technician in Clinical pathology
  • Current registration with the HPCSA
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Relevant business management qualification is advantageous
(e.g., MDP Programme)
  • Intermediate computer literacy (LIMS, Microsoft Office)
  • Must be familiar with QA functions e.g. SOP & ECS reviews,
PRISM system etc.
  • Must have at least 8 years of experience post HPCSA
registration as a Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory
Scientist/Medical Technician in a Clinical pathology
environment.
  • Must ideally have a minimum of 5 years’ line management
experience with direct reports (e.g. people, processes,
financial systems, and controls).
  • Experience in technical procedure implementation.
  • Experience in staff training and development.
  • Must have an acceptable performance record regarding the
technical and behavioural competencies including values-
based leadership required to perform in this position.
  • General management (e.g., planning, organising, leading and
motivating people, other asset resources, processes, financial
systems, and controls).
  • Ability to manage and optimise all site resources (intellectual
and physical resources including technology, people, finance,
and equipment) to achieve customer satisfaction and broad
Group and Area goals.


• Ability to optimise processes to achieve maximum

efficiencies through innovative thinking and proactive
problem-solving.

  • Ability to manage and optimise all site resources

  • Advanced interpersonal relations and conflict resolution
skills.
  • Effective verbal and electronic communication skills
(including report writing).

purpose, effectively lead change management and focus
on team building and conflict management proactively
and positively.
  • Ability to play a proactive role in the performance
management of staff which includes coaching and
mentoring of others by providing instruction, positive
models, and the opportunity to observe and learn.
  • Ability to foster trust through fair and consistent
behaviours/actions, humility and compassion and an
unwavering high regard for confidentiality.
  • Ability to manage a high-pressure environment, must be
extremely tenacious.
  • Must have a proven track record of building and
maintaining positive relationships with internal/external
stakeholders.

Area-specific responsibilities include:
  • Align and implement the area/group’s operational strategy within the business sites and provide support to the Senior Medical
Technologists regarding managing the day-to-day operations of the laboratory including HR, finance, staffing, quality matters and
auditing of systems.
  • Prioritise customer care and align operations with the Path Care strategy, values, and purpose of optimising patient care through
excellence in pathology services.
  • Create a customer service culture amongst all team members.
  • Implement, streamline, and standardise operations/administrative related processes and SOPs.
  • Build rapport and relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Review business processes/systems on a continuous basis/make recommendation for continuous improvement and deliver
operational effectiveness through accurate, reliable, and fast service delivery.
  • Manage cost drivers and implement financial processes and policies.
  • Manage and comply with Quality Management systems.
  • Support and ensure adherence to all Training and Development and HR initiatives, policies & procedures (including Employee
Relations and Wellness, Talent Acquisition/Talent Management, HR Administration, etc.)
  • Implement and embody the one@Path Care organisational culture including creating a work environment which stimulates
morale, enhances employee engagement and increases productivity
