About this opportunity – Background

At Volvo Cars, efficient design solutions for energy storage systems are being explored and designed. In a foreseeable future, Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries is the dominating solution for energy storage within such systems. For EV applications, the mechanical response of the battery cells is critical for the design of the battery pack. For example, it plays a vital role when evaluating the crash worthiness.

This thesis project aims to investigate and model the mechanical response of Li-ion batteries, focusing on the deformation behavior, mechanical integrity, and stress distribution under various conditions. The project will be undertaken by two master students, who will collaborate closely to develop predictive models for different battery types and loading conditions. The focus of the thesis will be on: (i) Exploring strategies for Finite Element (FE) model representation of different cell geometries and designs; (ii) Evaluating the effects of load velocity and state of charge (SOC) on the mechanical response of the cells; (iii) Study how CT-scan data of cells can be used to improve the reliability of FE-model representations of the battery cells. The work will build up on state-of-the-art modelling tools available at Volvo Cars and previous thesis work done at the department.

Scope of the Master Thesis:

• Evaluate modelling tools available at Volvo Cars for predicting the mechanical response of battery cells
  
• Explore FE-model representation for different cell geometries and designs
  
• Study the influence of load velocity and state of charge (SOC) on the mechanical response of battery cells
  
• Analyze CT-scan data of cell geometries and study methods for converting CT-scan data to FE-model representation
  
• Perform sensitivity analysis to study the influence of various model parameters
  

What you´ll bring

We are looking for students pursuing a Master of Science degree in applied mechanics, applied physics, mechanical engineering, or similar, to qualify. A genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical skills are needed. The ideal candidate has a background in computational mechanics and FE analysis. Further, you have a big interest in batteries and electric vehicles.
Main part of the work to be done on site at Volvo Cars R&D location in Torslanda, Göteborg, Sweden.
