Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) is a leading product development partnership (PDP) in the field of antimalarial drug research and development. Its mission is to reduce the burden of malaria in disease-endemic countries by discovering, developing and delivering new, effective and affordable antimalarial drugs.
Over the past two decades, MMV has worked with an extensive network of donors, private and public sector partners, experts and clinical centers in endemic countries to develop an outstanding portfolio of antimalarial projects.
Our portfolio is financed through funding support coming from government agencies, private and corporate foundations, international organizations, corporations and private individuals.
We are currently seeking a Communications Manager who will, as part of a small and dynamic team, implement the organisation’s communications strategy through various internal and external activities, primarily management of MMV’s external website, creation of print and digital content to raise the credibility and visibility of MMV. The role includes the function of internal stakeholder management, MMV brand guardian and communications representative on cross-functional teams at MMV.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Website and digital tools
  • Manage and optimise MMV’s web presence, advising internal teams on how to best leverage MMV’s digital assets to ensure they work in unison to further MMV’s mission
  • Ensure MMV’s corporate website is kept up-to-date on an ongoing basis and perform a full content review once per year
  • Drive traffic to MMV’s website using search engine optimization and marketing
  • Create and analyse Google Analytics reports and other relevant data sources to gauge performance of site and feed into its continuous improvement
  • Work with web developers to ensure the web design remains fresh and continuously improve the functionality of CMS with new features
  • Lead creation and content development for new websites with web developers, as needed
  • Keep up-to-date on new digital tools and identify opportunities.
  • Actively contribute to an editorial content calendar to ensure suitable timing and consistent outputs across the team.
  • Carry out activities relating to MMV’s online communications such as producing monthly newsletters and responding to web enquiries.
Content and planning
  • Contribute to MMV’s overall communications and positioning by proposing and executing communication plans and dissemination strategies that are relevant and engaging to target audiences that translate the comms strategy and priorities into measurable action.
  • Advise cross-functional teams as well as the fundraising and advocacy teams on communications matters.
  • Develop content for web, print and events e.g. news stories, opinion articles, short videos/animations, infographics, publications, conference flyers, roll-ups, speaking points and advertorials etc
  • Act as an ‘MMV brand guardian’ by maintaining appropriate and consistent language and terminology across all media, ensuring a unified brand identity.
  • Ensure that department policies are respected within the organisation and use expertise to continually improve communication services and processes.
  • Manage the review of communications-led documents intended for external readers through the MMV process, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and alignment with the organization’s messaging.
  • Contribute to ad-hoc communications projects as needed e.g. coordination of translation and layout of content.
  • Conduct administrative tasks to support the comms team, as needed.
  • Manage relationships with communications providers and consultants, including overseeing contracts, deliverables, and quality control

Education and experience:
  • University degree in communications, science, public health or related field
  • 5 to 8 years of work experience with digital and print communications preferably at an international organization and/or in the area of public health or science
  • Experience in analyzing relevant reports and information for dissemination to the management team
  • Keen interest in and experience of writing about science/global health for non-technical audiences
Technical skills required:
  • Excellent English writing and editing skills; able to produce clear, concise and engaging messages
  • Ability to understand and comply with ethical, legal and regulatory obligations associated with medical / pharmaceutical product communications.
  • Ability to compile, consolidate and organize information
  • Significant web editing experience, knowledge of content management systems and search engine optimisation
  • Clear and systematic thinking that demonstrates good judgment and problem-solving competencies
  • Skilled at editing images and preparing graphics; good knowledge of Photoshop
  • Experience with Google Ad Words an asset
  • Strong reporting and analytical skills
  • French language skills an asset
