We are currently looking for a Data Intern to join our global programme team in Geneva, Switzerland.


Position: Data Intern
Department: Global Programmes, Public Services, Markets and Infrastructure unit
Duration: 6 months
Remuneration: 1,450 CHF gross per month
Start date: November 2024
Location: Geneva, Switzerland



Overview

The Data Intern will be part of the IMPACT Global Programmes department, working within the Public Services, Markets and Infrastructure unit. They will be under the supervision of the Shelter Assessment Specialist and will be primarily working on the analysis of existing shelter data collected through various IMPACT research cycles. The selected candidate, jointly with the Shelter Assessment Specialist, will develop upon the start of the internship a specific set of objectives and a work plan, which will be reviewed at regular intervals during the internship period and will serve as a basis for evaluation upon completion of the internship.

INTERNSHIP OBJECTIVES
  • Develop familiarity with shelter interventions and key information needs in the sector for sound and effective measurement of needs, programming and targeting.
  • Gain exposure to the humanitarian cluster system, especially in the shelter sector.
  • Develop familiarity with key terms and measurements in the humanitarian and international development sector.
  • Gain practical experience in the international humanitarian coordination system, and develop in-depth understanding of today’s major humanitarian crises, their main drivers and consequences, and resulting humanitarian needs.
  • Gain experience in quantitative data processing and analysis tools and best practices in the humanitarian sector.
  • Develop the groundwork for future sectoral analyses and better data interoperability.
core Tasks
  • Contribute to the consolidation of 2024 MSNA shelter, energy and HLP data in view of a cross-crisis analysis
o Consolidation of MSNA shelter, energy and HLP data in a single database on the basis of the mapping of indicator that already exists.
o Preliminary analysis of each indicator across various types of crises.
  • Contribute to the design of future shelter indicators on the basis of lessons learned through analysis of existing datasets.
o Review of 2023 and 2024 indicators and collected data.
o Provide inputs to the revision of the shelter indicators to be collected next year.
o Provide inputs to the severity calculation revision on the basis of the revised indicators.
  • Support the development of research tools and guidelines on shelter, as required.
  • Flag and discuss potential issues with the supervisor, as and when relevant.
  • Provide other support to other workstreams within the Public Services, Markets and Infrastructure unit as required.

Requirements
Required:
  • Good academic qualifications, including a Bachelor’s degree or higher in relevant discipline (Social Sciences, Economics, Anthropology, Statistics, Monitoring & Evaluation, International Relations, Political Sciences, or similar)
  • Experience and proficiency with statistical data analysis software packages (R, SPSS, STATA, etc.)[GM1]
  • Interest in the shelter / housing sector and humanitarian sector in general
  • Fluency in oral and written English
  • Good working knowledge in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
  • Attention to detail and commitment to producing high quality work
  • Openness to feedback and willingness to learn
  • Ability to work independently, with initiative, and strong capacity to work in intercultural team
Desired:
  • Experience with primary research, especially in an international context
  • Fluency in oral and written French or Spanish
  • Familiarity with the humanitarian aid system
  • Experience with primary data collection or data collection platforms (KOBO)
  • Volunteering experience related to international solidarity, either at home or abroad

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
  • For this position, gross salary is 1’450 CHF monthly (before income tax). NB - IMPACT salaries are strictly determined by our salary grid depending on the grade of the position and the level of education and experience of staff. A contribution to medical insurance of 450 CHF per month is already included in the salary figure.
  • Applicants must hold a valid work permit for Switzerland or be EU/EFTA citizens
  • Up to 40% of remote work on a weekly basis
