Laboratory Technician

Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Laboratory Technician to join our Molecular Genetics and Cell Culture Laboratory team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in molecular biology and cell culture techniques, excellent organisational skills, and a keen attention to detail. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge cancer diagnostics and therapy guidance services in a dynamic laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Laboratory Operations
  • Prepare and maintain cell lines and primary cell cultures for diagnostic and therapeutic testing.
  • Perform molecular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, q PCR, next-generation sequencing (NGS), and electrophoresis.
  • Assist in the design and execution of lab tests under the supervision of senior scientists and the Laboratory Manager.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and instruments, ensuring they are calibrated and functioning properly.
  • Follow and enforce laboratory safety protocols and guidelines.
2. Quality Control and Compliance:
  • Ensure all laboratory activities comply with ISO 15189 standards and other relevant regulations.
  • Participate in internal and external quality control programs.
  • Document all procedures, results, and observations accurately in laboratory notebooks and electronic systems.
  • Assist in the preparation of laboratory audits and inspections.
3. Sample Management:
  • Receive, label, and process biological samples, including tumour biopsies and liquid biopsies, according to established protocols.
  • Store, archive and maintain accurate records of biological specimens.
  • Ensure proper disposal of biohazardous materials and chemical waste.
4. Data Management:
  • Input, manage, and analyse experimental data using LIMS software.
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations of experimental results.
  • Assist in the preparation of test findings, including the preparation of figures and tables.
5. Administrative Support:
  • Order and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents.
  • Coordinate with the purchase department for the procurement of specialised equipment and materials.
  • Assist in the training of new laboratory personnel and interns.
6. Continuous Improvement:
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in oncology diagnostics, molecular genetics, and cell culture techniques.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities such as workshops and seminars.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of laboratory protocols and procedures.
  • Monitor and train other lab personnel once achieved proficiency in lab procedures.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biotechnology, or a related field with a focus on oncology diagnostics. A master's degree is preferred.
  • Experience: Preferred 1-2 years of experience working in a molecular genetics or cell culture laboratory.
Skills:
  • Proficiency in molecular biology techniques and cell culture methodologies specific to oncology diagnostics and therapy guidance.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organisational and time management abilities.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Work Environment:
  • The role requires working in a laboratory setting with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards.
  • Must adhere to safety protocols and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
