We are looking to appoint a Learning Mentor to join our dedicated SEN team. The position of Learning Mentor focuses on working with students who need additional academic support and mentoring according to their needs. You will support students in their learning, encouraging them to become independent learners and working with them to achieve positive outcomes. This role will involve supervising our brand-new SEN classroom and will play a vital role within our pastoral support system.
Already experienced in a SEN or mainstream education environment, you will be forward-thinking, engaging and resilient, and have an innovative style of mentoring, motivated by helping every student to reach their potential. The role will include one-to-one and small group mentoring and support to improve academic progress and learning. In particular, you will be able to support in Maths and English and will be able to work proactively with students so that they are able to access the learning planned by teachers. You must be experienced in or have a willingness to work with different learning difficulties as well as challenging behaviour.
Main responsibilities will include:
- Supervising our new SEN classroom within the department
- Promoting the inclusion of all students
- Helping the students who are underperforming in their subjects and reluctant to learn, predominantly in Maths and English, on a one-to-one basis outside the classroom
- Providing learning activities for individuals and groups of students, differentiating and adapting learning programmes to suit the needs of the allocated students
- Selecting and adapting appropriate resources and methods to facilitate agreed learning activities
- Working with school staff to identify students who would benefit from mentoring, contributing to assessment and the identification of priorities and targets
- Assisting and supporting students with special educational and general learning needs in order to develop their independence
- Implementing strategies and supporting students in self-esteem and confidence-building activities
- Listening to, encouraging and motivating students to resolve a range of issues that are creating barriers to learning
- Drawing up agreed action plans with students, outlining the aims of the mentoring
- Assessing, recording and reporting on development, progress and attainment
- Have a minimum of two years’ experience working in an LSA, Teaching Assistant or school-based role
- Be educated to a minimum requirement of Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent) in GCSE English and Maths and be confident in supporting students in these subjects
- Have experience of working with children in overcoming barriers to learning
- Be compassionate and caring with an understanding of students with SEN
- Have an interest in and passion for working with students with special educational needs
- Promote self-esteem and confidence and help children to become emotionally healthy
- Have high expectations of themselves, striving for the best in everything they do
- Be an enthusiastic, committed and ambitious team player, open to learning and professional development
- Be a strong presence and be hard working, enthusiastic and committed
- Excellent facilities. To accommodate our expanding roll, Leventhorpe has just completed an extensive £12 million capital build programme including a Science and Sixth Form block and a state of the art Performing Arts and English block. In recent years, investment has included a £6 million Sports Complex (sports hall, fitness suite, dance studio, all weather pitch and floodlit tennis courts)
- A positive working environment in a heavily oversubscribed school with an excellent academic record and high standards. We place strong emphasis on student learning and achievement
- Exceptionally dedicated colleagues and enthusiastic students
- Priority admission for children of staff after a qualifying period
