Position Location
Wooster, Ohio - The position reports to the Director of the Agricultural Technical Institute (Ohio State ATI) located on The Ohio State University Wooster campus.

Performance Objectives
  • Teach approximately six to seven courses per year.
  • Serve as the Animal Sciences-Biosciences Program Coordinator by working with the division chair and associated faculty at Ohio State ATI and in collaboration with the Department of Animal Sciences to develop syllabi, curriculum, assessment measures and the schedule of classes.
  • Assist with identifying and onboarding associated faculty as needed.
  • Be actively involved in student recruitment and orientation.
  • Advise undergraduate biosciences students.
  • Develop a thematically focused scholarship program validated by peers.
  • Work collaboratively with university and Ohio State ATI faculty and staff, and/or OSU extension, government agencies, non-government organizations, and/or community groups to advance the land grant mission of the college and university.
  • Serve the Institute, College, University, and professional communities through committee work, service, leadership, and other appropriate responsibilities and activities.
  • Participate in professional development activities related to their discipline and the scholarship of teaching.
  • Demonstrate an ability to cultivate learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds, and commitment to enhancing civility and inclusion within Ohio State ATI.

Position Description
The individual will teach courses in animal sciences with an emphasis on dairy cattle and veterinary related classes, for example: lactation, milking management, and milk quality; reproduction, and reproduction processes; animal health, immunity, disease control and treatment, and herd management; dairy facilities, equipment, and environment; nutrition and feeding management; and herd production records. The ability to teach or assist with dairy business management and milk marketing, dairy genetics, and live animal evaluation courses, other general animal science courses (anatomy and physiology, introductory animal sciences, animal handling), or other species (beef, horse, small ruminants, swine, companion animals) specific courses is highly desirable depending upon instructional needs and the individual’s background, experience, and interest. Excellence in teaching and highly developed communication skills is expected.

The individual will provide leadership to academic programs as assigned, assist in course and curriculum development related to dairy and animal science academic programs; attend academic program-related, division, and institute meetings; participate in professional development programs related to the dairy and animal science disciplines and the scholarship of teaching; serve on committees as needed; and develops and/or enhances strong working relationships with the dairy and animal industries. The individual will serve as an academic advisor for animal science students, an advisor to student organizations, and assist with student recruitment activities.

The individual will conduct scholarship in dairy science, animal science, and/or teaching pedagogy.

The hire is expected to participate in professional development programs related to the dairy/animal science disciplines and the scholarship of teaching; provide program leadership; serve on committees as needed; and attend academic program-related, division, and institute meetings. Assist with academic advising, student organization advising, and recruitment activities.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required Education
Ph D or DVM with a major in dairy science, animal sciences, veterinary medicine or closely related discipline.

Required Experience
Five years of prior classroom teaching experience in undergraduate dairy or animal science education.

Desired Experience
Five years of work experience (employment) in dairy and/or animal related industries.

The Agricultural Technical Institute

Ohio State ATI’s 1,700-acre working agricultural learning laboratory includes dairy, beef, swine, and sheep-goat operations; an equine center; a heifer-raising facility; and a land laboratory for crop and environmental research. On-campus resources include environmentally controlled greenhouses with hydroponic systems, the latest software for computer-assisted design (CAD), sports fields, turfgrass plots, a model golf hole, and science labs equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation such as electrophoresis equipment for DNA analysis. The CFAES Wooster campus encompasses Ohio State ATI and one of the United States’ largest agricultural-related research institutes, which is also a source of internships and campus jobs for ATI students. Secrest Arboretum, a 110-acre outdoor laboratory and landscape garden, is also located at CFAES Wooster.
