Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide instruction and monitor teaching/learning effectiveness in courses assigned by the Department Chairperson, with the approval of the Dean and the Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs. Use up-to-date discipline and pedagogical skills to ensure active participation and learning by students.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop, evaluate, and revise programs, courses, and objectives to ensure instructional and programmatic responsiveness to the occupational and academic needs of students and to ensure instructional quality as demonstrated by students' achievement of competency-based objectives.
  • Prepare and, on the first day of class, distribute syllabi, which inform students about course requirements, grading requirements, testing assignments, absence policy, and other pertinent information for each course assigned.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade assignments and examinations in a timely manner to inform students about their progress and to provide opportunities, which will allow students to succeed. Use multiple measures of assessment. Include opportunities for research and outside assignments.
4. Encourage use of support services by students. Collaborate with support services staff to ensure that appropriate information is shared and discussed.
5. Provide appropriate information to Library staff regarding desired discipline materials.
6. Follow the academic calendar and other policies and procedures adopted by the Board of Trustees.
7. Serve as peer mentor when requested.
8. Participate a minimum of forty hours on campus assigned duties, including an average of two posted office hours or the Learning Center for consultation with students.
9. Stay current of changes that occur in discipline. Participate in department initiatives to infuse changes into curriculum. Participate in interdisciplinary discussions, which are directed at improving student learning and evaluating core competencies curriculum.
10. Sponsor or provide assistance with student clubs and organizations.
11. Distribute student evaluation forms on a timely basis.
12. Provide a safe environment for students and be responsible for the security of assigned equipment, materials, and classrooms.
13. Promote the College's programs and curricula.
14. Follow procedures related to the registration Office, including grade reports and deadlines; attendance record reports; withdrawal deadlines; class changes; and time and room scheduling.
15. Participate in the preparation and updating of class schedules and the Catalog.
16. Follow proper procedures for requesting textbooks, instructional supplies, and expendable supplies; submit travel and absence reports in a timely manner.
17. Participate in career days for elementary and secondary school students; participate in civic activities for communicating services provided by the College.
18. Participate in Southern Association accreditation activities; implement Institutional Effectiveness Plan related to academic area.
19. Participate in college and departmental committees and activities. Substitute for colleagues as appropriate.
20. Prepare professional development plan in consultation with the department chair; review plan on an on-going basis with the department chair; work with assigned peer/mentor.
21. Participate in faculty evaluations as described by the department chair and/or the Dean of Workforce Education & South Campus.
22. Participate in meetings called by the Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dean of Workforce Education & South Campus, or department chair for the purpose of disseminating information, providing input into the decision making process, and sharing expertise with colleagues.
23. Participate as a faculty advisory during the registration process and during the semester by providing accurate career counseling and guidance at time assigned by the department chair or Dean of Workforce Education & South Campus. Use the Program Degree Guide on an on-going basis to maintain current information about each student. .
24. Respond to requests for information from the Dean of Work force Education & South Campus/DEAN or Office.
25. Participate in college activities, which include but are not limited to orientation, convocation, in-service, graduation, and workshops designed for growth and development.

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:
  • Master’s degree in Criminal Justice or Master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in Criminal Justice.
  • Graduate coursework hours must be aligned with course learning outcomes that instructor will be teaching.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in any of the following: Certified Police Officer or other law enforcement; Probation Office; Parole Office, or other Criminal Justice field.
  • Police certifications and licenses in local, State or Federal government. Includes but not limited to: Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE); Federal Agent/Officer, Texas Dept. Criminal Justice.
Preferred:
  • Minimum of ten years of experience in law enforcement (Local, State, or Federal), corrections, community corrections (probation, parole, etc.) or forensics.
  • Teaching experience in Higher Education.
  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Basic and Advanced instructor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Be knowledgeable, mature, and concerned with the academic progress of students.
  • Be cooperative and professional in dealing with college administrators, collogues, and students.
  • Use of knowledge of diverse communities and skill sets to diversify teaching methods and delivery of content in instruction.
  • Proficient in word processing MS Word, EXCEL, Power Point and ability to use current technology to enhance teaching effectiveness.

Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work is performed in a standard office environment.
Work-inside a well-lighted and air-conditioned area most of the time.
