The Prince George’s County Department of Permitting, Inspections, & Enforcement is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill an Engineer I position, grade G23, in the Site/Road Plan Review Division.
About the Position:
The Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement (DPIE) is currently seeking to hire one (1) highly qualified individuals to fill one (1) vacant Engineer I - 1000 hour positions, grade G-23, in the Site/Road Plan Review Division. The incumbent in this class performs a variety of engineering reviews and analyses of permit plans and computations for site-related and building-related permits. Knowledge of county codes related to grading, stormwater management, storm drain, drainage, sediment control, and site road review of building permits. The work requires employees to review and process plans, studies and permits to confirm compliance with codes, as well as county, state, and federal standards, such as the County Specifications and Standards for Roads and Bridges. The work also requires employee to visit sites to conduct field investigations and inspect project conditions and implementation.
About The Agency:
The Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement (DPIE) is responsible for coordinating and enforcing standards that control what goes on before, during, and after construction. Staff from nine agencies, who work cooperatively on permit processing, business licensing, plan review, inspection and enforcement comprise Department of Permitting, Inspections, and Enforcement. The Mission of the Department of Permitting, Inspections, and Enforcement is to promote economic development in Prince George's County and protect the safety of County residents, businesses, and visitors through efficient permitting, inspection and licensing services to ensure compliance with established building, zoning and property standards codes.
Examples of Work
- Provides entry-level to full-performance professional engineering and technical support in the areas of Traffic Engineering and Utilities;
- Reviews cell tower permits, utility plans/permits, traffic signal plans, traffic control plans, street tree and lighting plans, roadway improvement plans, signing and pavement marking plans;
- Reviews traffic impact studies, traffic analysis, utility permits, permit applications, roadway construction plans, and other development proposals and specs;
- Updates County Road inventory and possess skills necessary to update GIS database
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
- A professional Engineer (P.E.) License may be substituted for the degree
Preferred Qualifications:
- Applicant possesses computer skills in Excel, Access, Power Point, and Word. Familiarity with permitting software.
- Familiarity with County requirements for grading and building permits.
- Knowledge of codes and standards related to roadways, storm drains, stormwater management, grading, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and knowledge of site development engineering.
- Experience in reading civil engineering plans, and application of codes, plus demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
Additional Information
Conditions of Employment: Upon selection, the candidate must:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
- Must pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening

- Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
- Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable.
- May be required to successfully pass preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings, where applicable.
- Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
