The goal of this recruitment is to fill the positions at the Fish & Wildlife Technician (FWT) level. However, we encourage candidates to apply for the Fish & Wildlife Technician Entry level ($3,218 - $3,948/mo.) as the department may consider under-filling the position.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:
As a Fish and Wildlife Technician (Hatchery Technician), you will perform fish culture duties to meet production goals, maintain equipment, grounds, buildings, and perform other assigned duties. The responsibilities of this position include:
  • Fish Rearing
  • Handling of hatchery and wild adult brood stock.
  • Incubation and egg handling
  • Water systems maintenance and operations
  • Perform preventive and/or corrective maintenance using hand tools and power equipment
  • Repair, construct or manufacture special tools, equipment, and/or structures for fish culture use
  • Fish Liberations
  • Complete daily and monthly records, forms, and written reports to document fish culture and maintenance activities
  • Meet and communicate with the public

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked daily, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary daily, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.
  • Works irregular hours (some nights when necessary), weekends on a rotational basis, outdoors in inclement weather.
  • This position requires the possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL). On your application, be sure to indicate in the Work Experience section if you have a CDL. If the selected applicant does not possess a CDL, they are required to obtain this license within six months of hire and must retain it as a condition of continued employment in this position. The department provides a training program for drivers obtain their CDL and will train all new employees how to operate a department Commercial Motor Vehicle. The department does not pay the cost for the CDL however, the department will reimburse employees up to one-hundred dollars ($100) for the CDL examination fees and renewal licensing fees pursuant to the Collective Bargaining Agreement 2021-2023 Letter of Agreement 00.00-19-338. The cost of the physical exam would be covered (usual, customary, and reasonable as determined by PEBB Medical Plans) if the employee is enrolled in an eligible PEBB Medical Plan. Pursuant to the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and Federal Highway Administration regulations, candidates must successfully pass a preemployment controlled substance test before being hired into this position. Additionally, employees required to hold a CDL will be subject to random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up alcohol/controlled substance testing as a condition of employment.
  • Required to lift objects such as bags of feed, cartons of chemicals, and pieces of equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Required to work in or near cold, deep or fast-moving water for extended periods of time.
  • Must handle chemicals used for treatment of fish or disinfecting of equipment for disease control purposes.
  • Must work with paint, vehicle fuel, lubricants and solvents during routine maintenance activities.
  • Must make trips off station, sometimes overnight, for liberations, spawning, meetings and training.
  • Required to climb ladders, and to stand, bend, stoop, and work in odd positions for periods of time.
  • Must display a good sense of diplomacy when dealing with the public. Works on weekends and may have to respond to emergency situations while working alone.

We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:
Fish & Wildlife Technician Option ($3,477 - $4,755/mo):
An Associate's degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture or Aquarium Science;
- OR -
Eighteen months of fish culture (care of fish) experience. (six months of fisheries, fish screens, wildlife or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience).

A higher level degree in Fisheries Science or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate's degree.
Fish and Wildlife Technician Entry Option ($3,218 - $3,948/mo):
Minimum qualifications are not established for this classification (there are no minimum qualifications). Previous related experience is desirable.
DESIRED SKILLS:
  • Experience working with eggs and fry, adult fish and fish liberation
  • Experience with water systems and maintenance
  • Experience operating electronic or mechanical equipment
  • Experience collecting and recording data and writing summary reports
  • Experience working with the public
