Maintenance Operations, a branch of the Facilities Operations and Maintenance Division, provides comprehensive maintenance services in support of the University’s operations.
Our teams provide a comprehensive array of qualified services, backed by our licensed and certified technicians, to this end, we offer opportunities for continuing education, as well as various stipends for additional trade licenses. Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for any employee without sponsorship.
Security sensitive; Criminal background check conducted on selected applicant. Hiring decision is contingent on applicant clearing check. This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code §51.215. Applications will be reviewed online by the hiring department. Swing Shift Position, hours will be discussed with supervisor. 40 hours a week, shift could be between 2:00pm and 2:00am M-F. May require some holiday or weekend work. This position is required to occasionally work on-call. This position is entitled to shift differential in the amount of $3898 per year.
Purpose
Performs journey level preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostic testing, and repairs of mechanical systems in campus facilities. Performs journey level work in the installation, maintenance, repair and service of electrical systems.
Responsibilities
  • Responds to heating and cooling trouble calls, interfaces with customers, troubleshoots electronic and pneumatic controls systems and components to maintain HVAC comfort control in university buildings.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and calibrates electronic and pneumatic controls and sensors to prevent failures and to keep the building HVAC equipment operating at optimum performance for maximum energy conservation.
  • Renovates and upgrades control systems to provide efficient operation of HVAC equipment and improve building comfort.
  • Assists others as requested to help troubleshoot HVAC and other equipment to limit the equipment downtime and to resolve concerns related to the campus HVAC equipment.
  • Interprets and works from drawings, specifications, and sketches, for assigned projects to ensure university standards are maintained. Commissions control systems for new and renovation construction projects to ensure final control installation meets standards and functional requirements. Performs work independently from written or verbal instructions and in accordance with established safety procedures to complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Researches and recommends repair components and test equipment to assist in procuring components. Creates material lists and acquires materials for efficient work. Keeps accurate records of materials used and maintains daily time reports to efficiently complete work and document details of the functions performed. Keeps accurate and up-to-date documentation of all systems.
  • Assists other shops and team members in the accomplishment of shop goals related to key performance indicators. Assists outside entities. Provides timely and courteous customer service, keeps supervisors up-to-date on daily work order status to ensure clear, concise, and necessary communication channels are maintained and customer expectations are met. Drive University vehicles to job sites will be required for this and some other functions.
  • Gathers building HVAC and mechanical field data to facilitate analysis and improvement of HVAC performance. Participates in the On-Call Program.
Required Qualifications
High school or GED. Three years of journey-level experience with the installation, repair, maintenance and operation of pneumatic and DDC instrumentation and control systems. Demonstrate excellent communication skills. Demonstrated ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Associates degree in a technical field. More than three years of journey level experience with the installation, repair, maintenance and operation of pneumatic and DDC instrumentation and control systems. International Society of Automation Certified Controls Systems Technician (ISA CCST) Level 1 certification. Experience at the University of Texas or in a university setting. Demonstrated ability to adhere to safety rules and regulations. Demonstrated ability to handle responses. Demonstrated ability to give a verbal sequence to a response. Demonstrated ability to work well within a team environment. Successful completion of the Leader Development Program.
Salary Range
$51,975 + depending on qualifications

Additional Working Conditions:
  • This position and associated job duties have been designated as essential during extraordinary and emergency situations when the university is closed. Essential personnel must maintain contact with their supervisor and report to work as regularly scheduled unless directed otherwise.
  • Required to operate an electronic device such as an i Phone, i Pad, or laptop/desktop computer to perform and fulfill time reporting and work management requirements. Work management requirements include receiving work assignments, updating work orders, and other functions as required.
  • May be required to work in confined spaces, manholes, tunnels, elevated work, extended shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Considerable walking, standing, squatting, stooping, and moving of heavy materials and equipment in all weather conditions.
  • May be required to use of personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing duties.
  • May be exposed to loud noise, high dust and allergen levels.
  • May be required to lift up to 50lbs. Often required to twist, grasp, push, pull and bend.
  • May be required to operate forklifts, personnel lifts and cranes. Operate job related equipment.
  • May be required to perform elevated work. Occasional work from ladders and/or scaffolds.
  • May require tuberculosis screening and occasional use of a respirator.
  • Drive University vehicles. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4.
  • Participate in on-call program.
Work Shift
  • 40 hours a week, five 8-hour days, or possible four 10-hour days with schedule to be determined with supervisor. Some overtime, evening, weekends, and holidays possible
