POSITION DESCRIPTION
This position focuses on the development and implementation of molecular tools to detect and/or produce small molecule analytes in living animals. These studies rely heavily on use of fluorescent microscopy, mammalian cell culture, molecular biology techniques (e.g., cloning), bacterial cell culture, protein purification, computational chemistry, and analytical chemistry. The Junior Specialist will work directly with the principal investigator and lab members to pursue neuroscience research. S/he will interact with graduate students and postdoctoral researchers and assist with facilitating research work. S/he will be involved in research activities, results of which will be presented at local, regional, and national conferences and meetings. S/he will also participate in reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions about the research and the interpretation of results. S/he will possess strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Major Responsibilities and Designated Areas of Expertise
I. Research in Specialized Areas (90%)
50% Perform fluorescent biosensor assays, mammalian cell culture, immunocytochemistry studies, molecular cloning, bacterial cell culture, protein purification, computational chemistry, and analytical chemistry.
20% Perform primary neuronal culture to aid in sample acquisition. Perform in vivo studies to assess the efficacy of biosensors and/or measure analytes.
10% Perform other laboratory techniques as needed to carry out pharmacological characterization of small molecules.
10% Participate in discussions about the research; assist with the interpretation of research results, document research results, and prepare reporest for publication.

II. Professional Competence and Activity (5%)
5% Participate in appropriate professional/technical groups and other educational/research organizations and campus units as needed; Read publications related to research area.

III. University and Public Service (5%)
5% Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in lab and perform assigned group jobs.

QUALIFICATIONS
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
A bachelor of science degree in biological sciences, neuroscience, or related field is required for the position.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
The ideal candidate will have strong cell culture skills, general knowledge of operating high content imagers and analytical instruments (e.g., mass spectrometer).
The ideal candidate must have strong leadership and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Must have undergraduate research experience and preferably post baccalaureate work experience in an academic research lab. Previous experience generating and maintaining primary neuronal cultures is required.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)
Primary neuronal culture experience and use of high content imagers (such as a CX7) is preferred.
