Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 21 years old before completion of the training program
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Citizen of the United States before completion of certification training
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to pass a background check and physical fitness assessment
  • There is no residency requirement for Omaha Police Officers!
Essential Functions of a Police Officer:
  • Enforce federal, state, county, and city laws by de-escalating chaotic situations and apprehending potential suspects.
  • Conduct investigations and various patrol activities, including traffic investigations as assigned.
  • Serve as a first responder to disaster and emergency incidents.
  • Use appropriate force when necessary, including the use of firearms and weapons.
  • Communicate effectively with law enforcement personnel, dispatchers, citizens, witnesses, offenders, and victims.
  • Safeguard and account for evidence and non-department property.
  • Perform administrative activities, including writing reports, completing required documentation, and staying informed about new department orders and policies.
  • Participate in court procedures and proceedings.
  • Attend and engage in training activities as required.
  • Maintain regular attendance in accordance with a schedule established by your supervisor.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of an investigation.
Abilities of a Police Officer:
  • Adapt to advances in technology and software.
  • Comprehend and adhere to the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics and the OPD mission.
  • Successfully complete the police academy training.
  • Maintain an adequate fitness level.
  • Perform duties while wearing a duty belt and bulletproof vest.
  • Work effectively in inclement weather and adverse conditions.
Knowledge of a Police Officer:
  • Understand department policies, procedures, and officer safety protocols.
  • Familiarity with roadways, traffic patterns, and the Omaha service area.
  • Knowledge of criminal and civil law, including laws pertaining to various offenses.
  • Comprehension of the United States Constitution, laws regarding individual rights, and court processes.
  • Proficiency in arrest and control tactics, firearm safety, and community policing principles.
Skills of a Police Officer:
  • Shooting a service weapon by State Standards.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Strong decision-making, judgment, and reasoning abilities.
  • Composure and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to recognize and identify odors with adequate hearing and vision standards.
