Substitute Bus Driver
Job Description
Job Summary:
Transporting students safely to and from school and school-related
activities. Providing a consistent, safe “face” for the students to see every day and
making a difference in a child’s life. Substitute Bus Driver hours will vary as needed.
Position Reports to: Transportation Director.
Essential Job Functions:
-Safely driving a school bus as assigned, on routes to and from school and school-
related activities; and in accordance with District policies and procedures, and State
laws.
- Assessing potential emergency situations for the purpose of taking appropriate action
- Supervising, assisting, and instructing students and other passengers for the purpose
specifically assigned stops.
- Assisting special needs students with a variety of issues including wheelchairs, safety
related special needs concerns for the purpose of taking appropriate action to protect
the wellbeing of passengers.
- Conducting vehicle pre-trip and post-trip inspection as prescribed by law.
- Reporting vehicle mechanical defects in accordance with District policies and

- Cleaning assigned vehicles, both interior/exterior for the purpose of maintaining

Other Job Functions:
Assisting other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the
completion of their work activities.
Adding oil and/or coolant and fuels to the assigned vehicle for the purpose of
maintaining the vehicle in a safe operating condition.
Performance Standards: Perform all assigned job duties in a satisfactory manner; work
under direct supervision and independently use standardized routines; communicate
effectively to provide information and/or advise others; and comply with all District
policies and procedures.
Qualifications:
Experience preferred but not necessary. Minimum age requirement is 21.
Skills, Knowledge, and/or Abilities Required:
Knowledge of:
State and District laws, rules and regulations governing the operation of a school bus,
traffic safety, passenger loading and unloading, and student management.
Traffic signs and devices
Safe motor vehicle driving techniques.
Proper use of communication devices such as radios and other equipment.
How to use city and highway maps.
Ability to:
Operate large school buses in a safe and lawful manner during varying weather, road
and traffic conditions; and to recognize when conditions are unsafe for bus operation.
Maintain appropriate decorum with students of multicultural, language, age, emotional,
and behavioral differences.
Learn specific bus routes, complete scheduled routes in a timely manner, and adjust to
periodic changes in schedules and routes.
Operate buses for extended periods of time for over-the-road special activity trips and to
drive safely in unfamiliar surroundings varying from congested city streets to mountain
and rural roadways.
Maintain safe and appropriate atmosphere among students while they are being
transported and communicate discipline issues to appropriate administrators.
Recognize potential mechanical and safety equipment problems and report as
designated by District procedures.
Write legibly; and to make clear, brief, factual written and oral reports.
Maintain a safe driving record and appropriate licensure and certification.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication skills with a
wide diversity of individuals contacted in the course of work.
Read, speak and comprehend the English language sufficiently to converse with the
general public; understand traffic signs and signals; respond to official inquiries; and
generate reports and records.
Maintain confidentiality.
Education Required:
High School diploma; or any combination of education and
experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and
ability required to perform the job.
Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:
Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain licenses, certifications and cards
necessary for operating a school bus. The aforementioned must be in the driver’s
possession while on duty.
Ability to pass DOT physical examinations.
Possess a driving record which meets or exceeds ODE and District standards.
Pass pre-employment alcohol/controlled substance tests; will also be subject to
random selection for mandatory alcohol/controlled substance testing.
Oregon Fingerprint and Criminal background check clearance.
Working Environment:
May include, but not limited to: Outdoor vehicle inspection and driving school buses of
various makes or models in all weather conditions. May be exposed to chemicals, fuel,
grease and oil, fumes from the aforementioned, blood-borne pathogens, inclement
weather conditions, and hazardous traffic and/or driving conditions.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to sit for extended periods of time. Regular
climbing, walking, balancing, lifting, carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and
crawling. Frequent twisting, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, grasping, fingering,
talking and hearing.
Physical capacities required to operate a bus:
Leg/foot use required to depress brake
pedal to a pressure of at least 90 pounds and depress clutch pedal to a pressure of at
least 40 pounds unless operating an automatic transmission. Pushing and pulling, e.g.,
up to 30 pounds of force to manually operate the bus entrance door and during an
emergency situation, a student(s) might have to be assisted, requiring carrying or
dragging a 125 pound person 30 feet in 30 seconds or less. Climbing e.g., a maximum
step height of 17 ½ inches to enter the bus and in an emergency situation, exit from an
emergency door opening of 24 x 48 inches and at least 42 inches from ground in ten
seconds or less.
Possess a reaction time of 3/4 of a second or less from the throttle to the brake control.
Continual hearing and not less than 7/15 in at least one (1) ear. Drivers requiring a
hearing aid must wear a properly operating aid at all times while operating a bus.
Continual vision requiring near acuity and far acuity of no less than 20/40 in each eye
either with or without corrective lenses and binocular acuity of at least 20/40 in both
eyes with or without corrective lenses, a field of vision of not less than a total of 140
degrees, depth perception and color vision to distinguish red, green and yellow colors.
Drivers requiring corrective lenses shall wear properly prescribed lenses at all time while
operating a bus.
Federal Regulations:
In order to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) you must be a permanent
resident of the United States or a US citizen.
In order to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Oregon School Bus drivers must
meet all federal regulations pertaining to CDL holders. This includes pre-employment
and random drug screens. Although the use of marijuana is legal in Oregon, it is not
legal federally, and therefore a positive drug screen test result for marijuana will
disqualify a person from obtaining a CDL.
Salary Range $25.41 - $34.31 / Hourly
