Background
The World Food Programme (WFP), the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is the United Nations agency that leads the global fight against hunger and its main mandate is to provide emergency assistance and develop sustainable solutions to combat hunger and poverty in the countries with the highest rates of poverty and food insecurity in the world. Its presence in Brazil takes place through the Centre of Excellence against Hunger, which is the result of a partnership signed between the WFP and the Brazilian government in 2011.
Our mission is to support countries in the creation and implementation of sustainable solutions against hunger, also acting as a global forum for political dialogue and learning about school feeding, nutrition and activities related to food security. By delivering technical assistance, advocacy efforts and policy guidance, we aim at increasing coverage, quality, and sustainability of school meals programmes, also promoting local agriculture and nutrition.
The purpose of this position is to assist us as a simultaneous translator-interpreter at meetings and events with African countries. You will be also involved in the translation and proofreading of technical documents and other communications within the scope of our Project activities, from Portuguese into English and from English into Portuguese.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities: The volunteer will report directly to the Project Coordinator and, within the delegated authority, will carry out the following tasks:
  • Assist in the organization of events and online meetings;
  • Perform simultaneous translation of dialogues and presentations in online meetings and events;
  • Translate technical documents from Portuguese into English and from English into Portuguese;
  • Proofread technical documents in Portuguese and English;
  • Keep the status of all tasks up to date and report on the progress of translation documents;
  • Perform other translation-related tasks as required.
Minimum qualifications
Education: You must be enrolled in the final semesters of a graduate or post-graduate programme from a recognized university in the area of Languages, Translation. Graduates or undergraduates are also encouraged to apply.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written communication in Portuguese and English. Fluency in French will be a plus.
Experience:
  • At least 6 months experience with simultaneous translation from Portuguese into English and from English into Portuguese;
  • At least 6 months experience with translation and proofreading of documents from Portuguese into English and from English into Portuguese;
  • Experience in the usage of online meetings tools, such as Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, etc.
Competencies: Good communication skills, good time management.
Availability and workload: Activities will be on demand and scheduled with at least 3 days in advance, mostly on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The volunteer should have flexible time arrangement, but the meetings and events will be scheduled to attend both the Centre and the volunteer availabilities.
Willingness to travel: National and Internacional travels are expected, specially to the countries assisted by the projects. All costs related to transportation and per diems will be covered by the Beyond Cotton project.
The candidate must have Brazilian nationality or be legally authorized to work in the country.
Definition and principles
WFP volunteers are individuals who donate their services to the Programme. They have no relationship to the United Nations Volunteers Programme (UNV), nor to the WFP Internship Programme. The objective of this opportunity is the exchange of experiences between the volunteer and the Center of Excellence against Hunger during a short time period.
There is no compensation for such volunteer services, however the Programme provides:
  • Insurance under the MCS scheme for service-incurred accident/illness/death;
  • Coverage under the WFP war risks/malicious acts policy;
  • Certificate of completion of work, including workload and performed activites.
