The Town of Cochrane is excited to recruit for the position of Casual Firefighter. We are seeking individuals to work in a thriving and dynamic community and committed to service excellence.

Key Accountabilities:
1. Performs all fire suppression duties necessary to save lives and property.
2. Provide emergency medical response and aid.
3. Ensure operational readiness of department resources to provide effective, efficient, safe and professional mitigation of emergency and non-emergency incidents on a continuous basis through assigned shifts or call out reporting through the chain of command.
4. Maintain proficiency deploying and operating all equipment and apparatus by completing all assigned drills, training or Job Performance Requirements (JPR).
5. Attend and participate actively in required daily drills, training or assigned courses. This includes corporate training programs that are assigned.
6. Actively support Fire Prevention Officers, as assigned by an Officer, to provide company level inspections to a basic standard and attend public education events.
7. Provide daily or rotational readiness of all fire equipment or apparatus, ensuring that all equipment and apparatus is consistently cleaned, maintained and in proper mechanical order and effectively stored or ready for response within approved responsibilities.
8. Carry out assigned or rotational daily duties which could include and are not limited to; daily pre-trip / post trip documentation, equipment and supply restocking, fire station cleaning, review or update of fire pre-plans, documentation of programs, general station duties, projects or special events.
9. Ensure all work is performed in accordance with workplace health and safety standards and that all policy, procedures, and legislation required by the Town, Province and Federal government.
10. Through professional ethics and integrity, demonstrate strong etiquette and skills in alignment with core and functional competencies. Participates in a positive team oriented environment that focuses on team development, cohesion, personal engagement and mentorship.
11. Exhibit honesty, respect and professional pride in conduct, uniform, appearance, business undertakings and operations that exemplify the fire service.
12. Participate in the performance appraisal system.
Minimum Requirements:
- Be at least eighteen (18) years of age at the time of the posting
- IFSAC or Pro Board Accredited NFPA 1001 - Firefighting Practices Level I and II Program including NFPA 1072 (472) Hazardous Materials Operations & Awareness
- Valid Alberta Driver’s License Class 1, 2 or 3 (or other Canadian equivalent) with air-brake endorsement and a driving history that demonstrates a commitment to the safe operation of a vehicle
- Defensive driving certificate within past two years
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Possess a valid Standard First Aid certificate (or higher) and valid Health Care Provider level CPR certificate
- Fluent in written and spoken English
- Be legally entitled to live and work in Canada
- No criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted
- Competency in the Microsoft Suite of software
- Ability to swim and physically able to perform the work
- Be willing to demonstrate and improve personal health habits that develop and maintain mental and physical resiliency. Ability to observe, identify, and openly communicate within a peer support network regarding mental health matters. Willingness to participate in mental health sessions and counseling for the personal development and maintenance of positive and resilient mental health that promotes a long a healthy career. Training, coaching, professional supports, and mentorship opportunities will be provided to successful candidates.
- Medical testing requirements (including vision and hearing) are based upon the NFPA 1582 standard with a restriction placed upon candidates with Category A medical conditions as defined in appendix G, NFPA 1582, Chapter 6, article 6.2.2. This clearance form will be provided to applicants who reach that stage of the process.
- IFSAC or Pro Board Accredited NFPA 1002 training
- Two years of municipal firefighting experience in a recognized fire service
- Candidates who reside within the municipal boundaries of Cochrane
- Post-secondary education in a related field
- Advanced prehospital medical training as an Emergency Medical Responder, Primary Care Paramedic or Advanced Care Paramedic that is currently registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics
- Advanced professional firefighting training
- Ability to work short notice shifts and have availability for a wide range of shifts
- Employees will be scheduled to work twelve (12) hour day or night shifts, or a combined day and night shift of twenty-four (24) hours, followed by appropriate time off work.
- Working conditions are governed by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Town of Cochrane and the Cochrane Fire Fighters’ Association, Town of Cochrane Policies and Procedures, and relevant legislation.
