The Position
Embark on an exciting journey with SAAM Towage as a Deckhand, where you'll contribute to our operational excellence and build a stronger maritime community through your dedication to safety, maintenance, and teamwork!
Under the direction of the Master and guidance of the Vessel Operations Superintendents, the Deckhand will contribute to the success of SAAM Towage by performing all tasks related to the docking and undocking operation of vessels, as well as light maintenance and cleaning tasks, during towing maneuvers, including routine tug maintenance to ensure compliance with services, company work policies, and safety.

To apply you must have ALL of the following minimum requirements:
▪ Unrestricted SVMO (Small Vessel Machinery Operator) Co C .
▪ Experience with towing maneuvers, docking and undocking operations, shipboard safety, maritime laws and regulations, and Bridge Watch.
▪ Current MEDS (Marine Emergency Duties) certificate
▪ Current Transport Canada Marine Medical certificate
▪ Current Marine Basic First Aid
▪ Basic to intermediate knowledge of computerized systems and Microsoft Office tools.
▪ Knowledge and experience with Occupational Health & Safety.
▪ Must be or become a member in good standing of the CMSG.
▪ Must be able to travel within Canada by air.
▪ Must be legally allowed to work in Canada.
▪ Must have a valid BC Driver's License.
Some of the Job functions for this role will be:
▪ ▪ Assists in all aspects of marine service delivery onboard while following the instructions of the Master. This includes any responsibility associated with the ordinary practice of good seamanship to ensure that maneuvers comply with current safety regulations.
▪ Carries out periodic check-ups and reports all maintenance, safety, and operational issues to the Master and Dispatch to contribute to the fleet's optimal maintenance and operational safety and create contingencies for service reliability.
▪ Performs daily light maintenance tasks such as chipping, painting, etc., to follow maintenance plans as instructed to contribute to the fleet's optimal operating performance, safety, and service reliability.
▪ Making, adjusting, and or inspecting all necessary rigging, tackle, and mooring equipment used for service delivery to maintain the efficient condition of ropes, hawsers, cables, slings, and messengers required for each service.
▪ Performing routine cleaning tasks under the direction of the Master to keep the vessel in optimal operating and cleanliness conditions.
▪ Performs routine inspections of all safety equipment onboard, including medical, first aid, and operational safety gear to ensure that equipment is replenished within the allowable time frame.
▪ Carries out all safety, health, environmental, and quality (SHE-Q) policies and complies with regulations including appropriate use of PPE, participation in emergency drills, and reporting of all incidents and events to ensure a safe and efficient operation and prompt addressing of equipment or procedure failures, minimizing operational liabilities.
▪ Prepares meals, manages inventory, and coordinates food plans, ensuring all perishables are stowed following Food Safe and other best practices and regulations to ensure proper food preservation and provide balanced nutrition to the Crew.
