We are seeking a Shelter Support Workers with Care Aide experience to join our team. As a Shelter Support Worker, you will be responsible for working as a part of a team providing overnight and day shelter support to persons experiencing homelessness. Out of the Cold is passionate about providing care that is client centered, empowered and works to assist persons in moving their lives forward.
Many of the persons attending shelter have complex care needs which can include unstable mental health needs, medical and mobility impairments and addiction concerns.
Applicants for this position MUST have previous employment experience in addictions, mental health and have strong communication skills. We are seeking persons with employment experience in care facilities, working with persons with disabilities and direct personal care.
Experience:
- Community Support Worker certificate, Care Aide certification, Addiction certificate, Bachelors of Psychology/Social Work required
- Previous experience working with persons experiencing homelessness, mental health concerns, addictions.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team (12 hour shifts only)
- Excellent communication skills / ability to navigate high risk/intense situations related to mental health/medical complications related to homelessness and addictions.
-Experience with BC Housing's Coordinated Access, VAT and HIFIS systems is considered to be an asset
-Superior organizational skills, time management and advocacy skills
-Possess strong initiative and good decision making skills
-Good written and oral communication skills
-Recognize the significance of building trusted relationships with the guests and the importance of empathic and respectful interactions.
-Self Motivated team player
-Able to contribute and be passionate about their part in a positive team culture
-Provide crisis intervention as necessary
-Ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic enviroment
-Possession of a valid Emergency First Aid, Non Violent Crisis Intervention Certificate, Food Safe level 1
-Integrity, discretion, compassion and tact are paramount.
-Understanding and comfort with the concept of Harm Reduction and Safe Consumption (guests are permitted to use substances on site - supervised by shelter staff).
-Moderate phyisical activity, including standing, walking, sitting, shelter laundry, cleaning and cooking in various conditions. Must have full physical ability to work as an equal team player.
Additional Requirements:
Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
Must be fluent in conversational and written english.
