Location - This position offers a flexible work arrangement, allowing for a combination of remote and/or in-office work based on work preferences. We welcome applicants from across Alberta. In the event that you need to work on-site, you may have the flexibility to attend either the Edmonton or Calgary offices based on your location and convenience. Working for the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI)
ABMI is dedicated to tracking changes in biodiversity across the entirety of Alberta for the next 100 years, and this resultant information provides Albertans the ability to make informed decisions about the state of their environment in ways never before possible.
Position
This position works in ABMI’s Science Centre and is responsible for supporting the development and implementation of ABMI’s statistical biodiversity analysis programs throughout Alberta. This includes leading statistical exploration, development, and reporting in active collaboration with multiple partners including the broader academic community, provincial and federal governments, environmental non-government organizations, Indigenous communities, and industry representatives from the natural resource sector.
Duties
- Analyze environmental monitoring data collected by ABMI to evaluate trends over time and relationships with human development activities for various species, with a focus on vascular and non-vascular plants.
- Develop and implement new analytical approaches for large biodiversity monitoring datasets.
- Conduct computer programming tasks to clean, store, and analyze data using a variety of software (e.g., R, Python, SQL, and Git).
- Provide expertise related to the delivery of ABMI monitoring programs, including methods, data collection, and analysis.
- Work with government, industry, and other technical representatives to explore the application of ABMI statistical products to planning, policy development, and environmental resource development.
- Produce papers in the scientific literature about the analysis of biodiversity data.
- Bachelor's degree (BSc) in ecology, environmental science, or a related field in natural resource management.
- Over 5 years of hands-on experience in resource management or related ecological work.
- Strong background in empirical statistical modeling using environmental data.
- Proficiency in R programming for ecological analyses.
- Proven track record of preparing and publishing scientific manuscripts.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with experience working in multidisciplinary research teams.
- Demonstrated analytical expertise in environmental or ecological studies.
- Master’s (MSc) or Ph D in terrestrial ecology, environmental science, or a related field.
- Advanced programming skills, particularly in R, with experience using Git Hub.
- Expertise in modeling species' responses to human activities and disturbances.
- Experience working with large datasets across a diverse range of species and ecological systems.
- Strong research background in community ecology, with a solid publication record.
