Doctoral students in Sustainability Transformation doctoral education pilot (2 positions)

The sustainability change research group at LUT University is looking for two junior researchers (doctoral students) in sustainability science. The positions are part of a national doctoral pilot, which consists of 16 programmes and offers funding for 1000 doctoral researchers in 2024–2027. Read more here.
The open positions are part of the Sustainability Transformation doctoral education pilot Sus Tra, which involves ten universities and the Finnish Environment Institute, SYKE. Research within the doctoral education pilot focuses on sustainability transformations in different sectors of society to find solutions to climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable use and management of natural resources. Research in the open positions will focus on system-level changes to ensure that human activities do not exceed the carrying capacity of the planet. Ecological economics provides a conceptual umbrella for approaches such as the following:

• growth critique and decolonisation of the economic system
• social metabolism and sustainable management of critical flows
• sufficiency and ecological modernisation of production and consumption practices

The selected doctoral researchers will be supervised by Professor Lassi Linnanen and Associate Professor Jarkko Levänen, and work will be conducted in the sustainability change group, which provides an inspiring working environment for this type of research. Read more here.
Applicants must have a master’s degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g., engineering, social/environmental/sustainability sciences, or economics/business studies), the ability to complete the doctoral degree within the normative duration of the studies for the degree and a right to complete doctoral studies at LUT University. Junior researchers need to obtain the right to complete doctoral studies at LUT within the first three months of their employment relationship.

Employment relationship and pay
The junior researcher position will be available initially for one year and can be extended by three years, provided that LUT deems the studies and research to have progressed satisfactorily and funding is secured.
The start date of employment is negotiable. The employment relationship is fixed-term with a six-month trial period. The salary is based on the current collective agreement for Finnish universities. The typical gross annual starting salary for a junior researcher is approximately 32 500 euros.
