Postdoctoral Researcher in Minority Stress and Gendered Lives of Same-Sex Couples

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER
for a fixed term period of 2 years, starting as agreed.
The Faculty of Social Sciences is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work in the "Minority stress and gendered lives of same-sex couples and their children in Finland (MISTLIFE)" project financed by the Research Council of Finland. The principal investigator (PI) of the project is Dr Elina Einiö.
The project aims to provide insight into how the changing social environment has shaped the lives of gay men and lesbian women in same-sex couples. The objective is to understand (1) educational and earning paths, (2) family formations and dissolutions, (3) mental health problems and intimate partner violence among individuals in same-sex couples, and (4) the educational achievement of children in families with same-sex parents. The project uses advanced statistical methods and mainly register-based data from Finland. The societal impact of the project goes far beyond academia, given that discrimination against sexual minority groups can take various forms that need to be statistically studied and discussed.
The successful applicant should contribute to one or more of the research themes of the project. The project is associated with the Helsinki Institute for Demography and Population Health and the newly established Max Planck - University of Helsinki Center on Social Inequalities in Population Health.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The main task of the appointed researcher is - jointly with the research team - to design and conduct quantitative research mostly on longitudinal register-based data. Additionally, the researcher is expected to actively contribute to teaching in the master's program in social sciences, or thesis supervision (up to 5% annually) and other research activities of the Institute.
QUALIFICATIONS
The appointee to the position must hold a doctoral degree in demography, sociology, social psychology, public health, data sciences, statistics, economics, or other relevant field, have strong quantitative methods skills and an excellent command of written English. The default assumption is that the degree requirement must be met by the beginning of employment.

The annual gross salary range will be approx. €44,500 - €50,000, depending on the appointee's qualifications and experience. The chosen applicant is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki. The Faculty of Social Sciences provides assistance in relocation.
