Microstructure of Materials and Systems

Research associate »Micromechanical Testing and Simulation | Hybrid wafer bonding«

Halle (Saale)

PART TIME

August 2, 2024

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft ( www.fraunhofer.com ) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS is a methodologically oriented Fraunhofer Institute in the specialist disciplines of materials science and materials engineering with more than 350 employees spread over three locations and with its headquarters in Halle (Saale). The work of the Fraunhofer IMWS is aimed at identifying defects and weakpoints in materials, components and systems on the micro- and nanoscale, to clarify their cause and to offer clients solutions based on the outcomes. The institute's industrial clients come, among other things, from the microelectronics and microsystem engineering, automotive engineering and the aircraft industry.

For our group »Assessment of electronic system integration«, we are looking for a scientist with strong skills and experience in the field of micromechanical testing for the following research areas:

The focus of our studies is on high-performance microelectronic components based on the vertical 3D integration of different semiconductor dies. Thereby, several thousand individual electrical contacts are connected to each other. One future technology used for this is hybrid bonding, whereby different contact areas (Cu, Si O) have to be activated and joined. In order to evaluate the joint contact, it is necessary to characterize it in terms of strength and reliability. A series of fracture mechanics and micromechanical tests in conjunction with FEM simulations will be used for this purpose.

What you will do

Application-oriented research in the field of material and interface evaluation with a focus on wafer bonding processes

Further development of test methods for evaluating the interface strength of bonded joints

Micromechanical characterization of wafer bond connections

Evaluation of measurement and analysis results in combination with FEM simulations

Project management: application, management and acquisition of public and industry-related projects

Compiling your research results for reports and publications

Attending national and international specialist events for scientific exchange and for publication and presentation of your results

What you bring to the table

Completed scientific university degree (Dipl./M. Sc.) in materials science, microsystems technology, physics, mechanical engineering or a related field

You have already practical knowledge in experimental material evaluation and experimental testing with focus on strength analyses for brittle materials

Ideally, you have experience in micromechanical testing techniques, interface evaluation, FE simulation and fracture mechanics

You have experience in project management and project acquisition

Motivation and enjoyment of interdisciplinary tasks and regular professional exchange

Independent, customer-oriented and goal-oriented way of working and team spirit

Ability to communicate ideas and reports emphatically and effectively to customers and colleagues - in German and English

What you can expect

Excellent research opportunities in a creative and state-of-the-art working environment

Interesting and challenging tasks in future-oriented research projects with a strong application focus and close collaboration with industry

Access to a broad network of experts and partners from industry and academia

Individual and extensive training opportunities and career boosters for your professional and personal development

A good work-life balance thanks to flexible working hours and locations and support for combining private life, family and career

Diversity as a strategic goal and equal opportunities in practice

Attractive corporate benefits at selected partner companies and a discounted job ticket

The position is initially limited to 3 years. The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD). Additionally Fraunhofer may grant performance-based variable remuneration components.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
