The mission of the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) as a nationally and internationally active research institute is to deliver solutions for an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable agriculture – together with society. ZALF is a member of the Leibniz Association and is located in Müncheberg (approx. 35 minutes by regional train from Berlin-Lichtenberg). The institute also maintains locations in Dedelow and Paulinenaue.

DRIVE is a collaborative research project funded by the BMBF, aimed at developing locally adapted, climate-resilient wheat varieties for the future using data-driven approaches. The project involves extensive high-throughput phenotyping and field experiments to develop new modeling routines for capturing compound heat and drought stress. Additionally, these routines will be integrated into large-scale climate change impact assessments and ideotyping. There is also an opportunity to complete a Ph D thesis as part of this project. The position will be based in the Research Platform “Data Analysis and Simulation“ within the Working Group “Ecosystem Modelling “.

Your tasks:

• analyze crop phenotyping data from high-throughput experiments, including extensive breeding variety panels, to develop modeling modules
• develop and implement algorithms to detect heat and drought responses among a wide range of growth and development related traits
• conduct climate change impact assessments using crop models across Germany, examining various varieties and climate change scenarios

Your qualifications:

• completed university studies in crop science or agronomy
• good knowledge in plant breeding and statistical genetics
• basic knowledge on crop modelling and stress physiology
• robust experience with R or Python
• proven experience in handling big data
• excellent written and spoken English skills required
