For the next possible date, our department Knowledge Technologies for the Social Sciences (KTS), Team Information Extraction and Linking, located in Cologne, is looking for a
Student Assistant – Social Web Scraping and Data Extraction
In the context of the research project New Order - Understanding the Erosion of the Traditional Knowledge Order in Scientific Online Discourse and its Impact in times of Crisis, KTS addresses the challenge of providing Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning methods for investigating the effects of communicating scientific information on social media on society and the research process and vice versa. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with an interdisciplinary project team including researchers from Psychology, Political and Communication Science.
Your tasks will be:
- Creating and managing data extraction pipelines on distributed systems for social media and web archives
- Data preprocessing and visualization
- Semantic annotation of web data
- Manual data labelling for ML/NLP
- Project website design and maintenance
Your profile:
- Master student in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics or a related field
- Strong software development and programming skills (Python)
- Basic knowledge of ML/NLP (methods, parameters for ML experiments)
- Good language skills in German and English
- Optional: Hands-on experience with handling big datasets, ideally experience with Hadoop/Map Reduce, Py Spark, and/or Spark NLP
