Thesis "Spraying Processes for Perovskite-Silicon Tandem Solar Cells"

Freiburg im Breisgau

August 23, 2024

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg is the largest solar research institute in Europe. Our approximately 1,400 employees work towards a sustainable, economical, safe and socially just energy supply system based on renewable energies. We contribute to this with our research focus on energy supply, energy distribution, energy storage and energy use. We are shaping the sustainable transformation of the energy system through outstanding research results, successful industrial projects, company spin-offs and global cooperation.

Would you like to play an active role in shaping the energy transition and write your thesis in this area? With us, you will find the experts and the environment to realize these goals.

For our group “Perowskit-Silizium-Tandemzellen Skalierung”, we are looking for a student assistant with the opportunity to write a thesis at the earliest possible date.

The focus of the thesis on “Spraying processes for perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells” is the development of a homogeneous spraying process for the application of a component of the perovskite absorber as well as the controlled drying and crystallization of the layer. The spray process is intended to replace the current laboratory standard, spin coating, and thus contribute to the scalability of the production of perovskite silicon tandem solar cells. The “Perovskite silicon tandem cell scaling” group has an extensive laboratory infrastructure with the latest process technology at its disposal for this purpose. In addition, we can utilize the entire spectrum of the Institute's photovoltaic technology across teams and work in close cooperation with the University of Freiburg. This results in a research infrastructure and expertise that offers you unique opportunities worldwide.

What you will do

  • The aim of your thesis is to investigate the influence of process parameters on the coating in order to achieve the best possible material quality and homogeneity of the perovskite absorber.
  • Your tasks will include planning and conducting experiments.
  • You will characterize the coating.
  • You will evaluate and interpret the results.
  • You will document your results neatly and conscientiously, summarize them and present them both internally and externally.

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying materials science, crystallography, chemistry, physics or a comparable subject.
  • Previous knowledge of tandem solar cells or perovskites is an advantage.
  • You have basic knowledge in the characterization of solar cells or semiconductors or would like to delve deeper into this area.
  • You plan and complete tasks independently and with high quality.
  • You work independently and with commitment.
  • You can express yourself confidently in German and/or English.

What you can expect

  • Exclusive insight: By working together with the scientists in our work unit, you will gain an insight into everyday research and development at a research institute.
  • Laboratory infrastructure: At Fraunhofer ISE, we work with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment so that research projects can be carried out using the latest technology.
  • Research mix: We give you the opportunity to combine experimental work with theory and thus apply and expand your knowledge from your studies.
  • Supervision: You will be supervised in your work by scientists and receive feedback on your progress.
  • Teamwork: In exchange with the scientific and student staff, you will gain experience of working in a team and can contribute your existing experience.
  • Working hours and location: We offer you the opportunity to flexibly adapt your working hours to your needs in consultation and to work from home from time to time.
  • Equal opportunities: We value equal opportunities and make room for diversity.
  • After work: Celebrate yourself and your colleagues at after-work events or our annual employee parties, such as the hiking day.

In addition to the thesis, a contract as a research assistant is agreed. The remuneration for this depends on the degree level of the university education.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

Interested? Apply online now. (incl. cover letter, curriculum vitae, references/proof of performance) We look forward to getting to know you!

We will be happy to answer any questions you may have about this position:
