Scientist - LRL HSE Industrial Hygiene / Safety

The LRL HSE group actively safeguards health, safety, and environmental standards within Lilly's research and development laboratories. Based in Indianapolis, this role supports discovery chemistry and biology labs at the Corporate Center, as well as development and process scale-up areas at the Technology Center-North campus. The ideal candidate will engage in day-to-day activities under the guidance of a team of HSE professionals who support LRL activities across Indianapolis. This position demands a proactive approach, working across functions and sites in a highly mobile environment, directed by multiple senior staff members. The role is crucial in ensuring compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and corporate HSE standards, contributing directly to the implementation of health and safety protocols and securing the well-being of employees while maintaining regulatory adherence.

Key Objectives and Deliverables:
Major responsibilities include the following elements:
  • Must have a knowledge of and ability to assist with biosafety requirements and work practices / control measures for lab operations.
  • Work with the LRL Biosafety Officer to implement and support all elements of the corporate Biosafety Manual and Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Program.
  • Experience implementing common safety programs such as machine guarding, lockout / tagout, fire safety, personal protective equipment, hazard communication, etc.
  • Serve as a technical resource for HSE related questions and regulatory interpretations for the laboratories.
  • Lead incident investigations, including conducting root cause analysis (when necessary).
  • Implement quantitative and qualitative industrial hygiene exposure assessment studies and risk assessments, independently or under the direction of LRL industrial hygiene staff.
  • Engage in management of change requests, such as conducting new chemical reviews and approvals, new chemical risk assessments, new capital equipment evaluations, support large scale capital projects, etc.
  • Manage and own HSE programs and engage in program self-assessments / corporate HSE audits and implement control measures and program improvements to close any identified gaps and drive ongoing improvement.
  • Assists the laboratories in interpreting and following the Lilly Chemical Hygiene Plan.
  • Ability to conduct employee training on a variety of health and safety topics.
  • Provide follow up to safety incidents and actions reported via the HSE Event Management system.
  • Assist with the collection and communication of HSE metrics.
  • Maintain and archive HSE related documentation in accordance with applicable regulations and internal standards.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in industrial hygiene, environmental health and safety, safety management, engineering, or other related fields.
  • Minimum 2-years work experience in health, safety and environmental with responsibilities owning / managing HSE program areas / aspects.
Additional Skills & Preferences:
  • Working knowledge of general safety programs; Machine Guarding, Lockout / Tagout, Fire Safety, Electrical Safety, etc.
  • Familiarity with laboratory waste streams / profiles and management of various types of waste, solid and liquid wastes, hazardous and non-hazardous waste, recycling programs, etc.
  • Basic understanding of radiation safety and various types of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation sources in labs.
  • Directly related experience in pharmaceutical or biotech setting, university, or other similar research environments and knowledge of scientific laboratory instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of basic HSE regulations and regulatory framework (OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc.) and other laboratory consensus standards.
  • Experience in creating a positive safety culture or helping to improve health, safety, and environmental performance.
  • Good organizational skills and effective time management, with a proven track record for being able to successfully manage multiple projects on a concurrent basis.
  • High degree of business and personal ethics and integrity.
  • Strong communication skills (oral, written, and presentation)
