ROLE SUMMARY:
We are seeking a Head of Language Acquisition, who will be responsible for leading the learning in the MYP and DP across the Languages department as well as someone who is an exceptional teacher. The ideal candidate is a leader who will empower those in his/her team to ensure they deliver the very best results for students. This person will be driven to capitalize on the innate interest of international students and their parents in languages and raise the profile of languages in IS Como. We are seeking a Head of Language Acquisition, who will be responsible for leading the learning in the MYP and DP across the Languages department as well as someone who is an exceptional teacher. The ideal candidate is a leader who will empower those in his/her team to ensure they deliver the very best results for students. This person will be driven to capitalize on the innate interest of international students and their parents in languages and raise the profile of languages in IS Como.
The person appointed will be expected to begin work in August 2025, before which date a criminal records check will need to be completed as part of our safer recruitment and child safeguarding policies.

About the school:
This is an exciting time to join The International School of Como, a recognised IB World school, authorised to offer the full International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum: the Primary Years Programme (PYP, ages 3-11), Middle Years Programme (MYP, ages 11-16) and Diploma Programme (DP, ages 16-18). We are also a candidate school for the Career-related Programme (CP, ages 16-18). In September 2024, new Executive Principal Philipa Smithson joined the school. An expansion project which has begun means that the school will grow over the coming years from 400 students to around 700. This means that there are likely to be several career development opportunities going forward.

The International School of Como moved into its definitive purpose-built campus in the nearby village of Fino Mornasco, 6km south of the beautiful lake Como. Our modern and spacious campus was designed to foster collaborative approaches to teaching and learning. Our campus benefits from science laboratories fitted with state-of-the-art equipment, a well-stocked central library, as well as studios for visual arts, drama and music. There are sports facilities on site and off site while we wait for our new pitches to be completed. Additionally, our youngest students thrive in their carefully designed on-site spaces which support the delivery of our Reggio-Inspired Early Years Curriculum. The expansion project is underway and will make for an impressive campus.
ISC currently has an enrolment of just under 400 students representing over 45 nationalities, with over 70 dedicated faculty and administration staff. Staff are supportive and welcoming and there is a close sense of community here.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
- Be committed to raising academic standards and getting the best value-added grade for every student.
- Have extensive experience in teaching a language acquisition subject at the high school level.
- Have a proven track record of promoting languages.
- Have experience leading a languages department (not essential but an advantage).
- Be an exceptional teacher who has high expectations of students and the department.
- Lead and collaborate effectively on the overall development of the curriculum of languages.
- Be committed to empowering students.
- Value promoting international mindedness.
- Value and promote the attributes of the learner profile while leading by example.
- Show a high level of initiative, flexibility, creativity, and have excellent organizational skills.
- Offer at least one co-curricular initiative a week that reflects their own interests.
- Lead a diverse team of language acquisition teachers with a common vision of excellence.
- Collaborate with the DP and CP core, particularly on language development and the language portfolio.
- Experience of teaching the IB is an advantage.
Requirements
- Bachelor degree or above in the relevant field
- Hold an EU passport or have already obtained the right to be employed in Italy
- Knowledge and skills in ICT literacy
