National Clinical Leader-AYA Cancer Network Aotearoa

Auckland

October 11, 2024

The AYA Cancer Network Aotearoa is seeking Expressions of Interest for a new National Clinical Lead
Are you a senior-level clinician who has the passion and expertise to drive improvements in cancer services for adolescents and young adults (AYAs)?
The AYA Cancer Network Aotearoa was established in 2014 to provide strategic direction, clinical leadership, and monitoring of AYA cancer in New Zealand. The aim of the Network is to find new and innovative ways of delivering care to all AYAs aged 12-24 years with cancer in order to improve their experiences and outcomes. Te Aho o Te Kahu - The Cancer Control Agency contracts directly with the Network to undertake this role.
The Network, working in partnership with Te Aho o Te Kahu, is seeking expressions of interest for a National Clinical Lead. We are looking for a senior-level health professional (including a doctor, nursing, or allied health professional) who has expert knowledge and experience in providing cancer and/or health and well‐being services to adolescents and young adults.
As a National Clinical Lead of the AYA Cancer Network Aotearoa, you will:
  • Be passionate about improving outcomes for young people with cancer.
  • Have extensive experience in the provision of cancer care and/or AYA health and wellbeing services and be an expert practitioner in your own field.
  • Be able to work across traditional health service boundaries, organisations, and professional groups to develop a national view for AYA cancer services that encompasses local, regional, and national concerns.
  • Have excellent interpersonal and leadership skills and be capable of inspiring others to implement positive changes.
  • Engage effectively with young people and their whānau, ensuring their voices and experiences are heard and valued.
  • Support the Network in developing and implementing a work programme to address inequities that are within our system and deliver improved outcomes for the young people and whānau we serve.
  • Be an effective communicator, providing clinical advice and systems thinking to support future planning.
  • Be invested in your own cultural competency and enact Te Tiriti by holding the Network and our health system to account, driving opportunities for equity improvements and equitable outcomes for Māori.
You can read the position description here.
The Network invites all interested applicants to apply, including those wishing to maintain their current clinical roles or explore the possibility of undertaking this role as a secondment. We are open to the position ranging from 0.2 to 0.8 FTE and this will be negotiated with the successful candidate. Additional appointments can be made to the Network team to ensure that there is the right composition for effectively delivering the work programme. Funding for the Clinical Lead role is secured for a fixed term until 30 June 2027, with the potential for renewal beyond this period.
The AYA Cancer Network Aotearoa is hosted by Starship Child Health - Te Toka Tumai, Health NZ and is located in Grafton, Auckland. However, we are supportive of flexible and hybrid working arrangements and the Clinical Lead may be based in any part of the motu. Some travel is expected.
The expressions of interest application can be completed online. Please include;
1. A cover letter setting out your interest in the position.
2. A brief (maximum 2 pages) resume of your career highlights as it pertains to AYA cancer and your leadership experience.
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview with a panel comprising representatives from Te Aho o Te Kahu - The Cancer Control Agency and the AYA Cancer Network Aotearoa. This interview will be by video conference.
If you have any questions about the role or wish to discuss it further in confidence, please get in touch with Kirsten Ballantine, AYA Cancer Network Aotearoa Programme Manager (Kirsten4@adhb.govt.nz), or Dr. Richard Sullivan, AYA Cancer Network Aotearoa Governance Group Chair (richard.sullivan@health.govt.nz).
Please note this role may suit a doctor, a psychologist/Allied Health professional, or a senior nurse
Applications close on Sunday 3 November.
