He angitūtanga | About the role
We're looking for a solicitor to bring their legal experience to join us in delivering rewarding mahi for conservation.
The primary focus of the position will be statutory plan updates advice, providing legal advice and providing support for legislative process in the broader context of Treaty of Waitangi considerations.

The position will be focussed on:
  • providing advice from a Treaty principles perspective on updating statutory planning documents and supporting the national planning advisory team
  • providing legal input and advice into DOC's work pursuant to the legislation it administers such as the Conservation Act, Wildlife Act and Marine Mammals Act
  • assisting internal teams and providing legal support and advice to teams such as the permissions and statutory land management teams
  • providing input and advice on DOC's activities, legislation administered by DOC, and other agencies, e.g. on work relating to the granting of permits and concessions.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

If you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you:
  • LLB or higher with an NZ practising certificate, or ability to obtain one.
  • Sound knowledge of the justice system, the parliamentary and legislative system and public service administration.
  • Knowledge in the application of relevant areas of law in which DOC operates.
  • An understanding of policy and practice issues relevant to DOC's business.
  • An understanding of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and how they relate to DOC's work.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate practical legal advice in a non-technical manner are essential.
  • Some practical experience providing advice to clients or in assisting in conducting cases and appearing before Courts and Tribunals.

The Legal Services Directorate sits within the Policy and Regulatory Services Group. Our purpose is to provide quality legal services that enables DOC to achieve our strategic outcomes.

Our work includes:
  • interpreting conservation and other legislation and policies to enable DOC to meet its statutory obligations
  • providing litigation and prosecution services
  • supporting our Policy colleagues in the development of legislation.

The salary range for this position is $79,656 - $100,639 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
