Port Otago Group’s business comprises a regional container terminal, bulk port activities, cruise and property investment and development. We service South Canterbury, Otago, and Southland, working with customers to streamline their supply chains. Our culture is hands-on, safety focused and encourages continuous improvement.
A rare opportunity has become available for a permanent Tug/General Deckhand to join our Marine & Infrastructure team, where you will enjoy stunning views of the Otago Harbour as your place of work.
In this role you will be working on our Port Otago owned and operated vessels, particularly our Tugs and Pilot Launch, responsible for both deckhand and maintenance duties on these vessels.
You will have the following Key Attributes:
  • An excellent Health and Safety record, and not afraid to speak up!
  • Previous experience as a deckhand is an advantage
  • Working knowledge of marine equipment and procedures desirable
  • The physical fitness to meet the demands of the role, and the ability to obtain a Seafarers Medical
  • The ability to work well as part of a team that requires flexibility 24/7
What you need to know about the role:
The Tug/General Deckhands provide cover for 24hrs/day, attending to all ship handling work required while rostered on. Rostering is based on an equal time roster.
You may be required to do relief work on other Port Otago vessels as required, and full training will be given to the successful applicant.
Heads up:
  • A full clean NZ Drivers licence is essential
  • You must be able to pass Ministry of Justice, ACC checks and a medical which includes a drug and alcohol test as part of our recruitment process
  • Random drug and alcohol testing as an employee of Port Otago
What’s in it for you?
This position attracts a competitive salary, 5 weeks annual leave, and you will be entitled to comprehensive health insurance cover through Uni Med for you, your partner and dependent children (valued at approx $4,200.00) and Superannuation matched up to 7% after 6 months service.
You can also look forward to working for an organisation which prides itself on ongoing Health and Wellness initiatives and having a collaborative work environment which encourages people to be as great as they can be. Contribution towards relocation costs to Dunedin are on offer if required.
How do I apply?
Please apply online via our website www.portotago.co.nz/careers to ensure our Port Otago Application Form is completed.
Please ensure that you include a copy of your up-to-date CV along with your application. If you are not currently living in Dunedin, please tell us why you would like to move to this wonderful city in your cover letter.
Applications close 5pm, Monday 28th of October 2024
Why move to Ōtepoti Dunedin?
Ōtepoti Dunedin is renowned for its distinctly quirky character, wildly beautiful places and wildlife, and its vibrant urban culture. It’s full of hidden gems, including the pristine beaches of Dunedin and East Otago, right on your doorstep.
Port Otago’s Head Office is a 20-minute drive from Dunedin’s city centre, in the beautiful harbour-side village of Port Chalmers - a Port town full of rich history and charm. Port Chalmers has a strong creative community and an eclectic mix of galleries, café’s, restaurants and businesses, many housed in original historic buildings. The short trip out to Port Chalmers provides you with picturesque views of the Otago Harbour for the entire journey, not to mention the stunning office views from our workplace once you get here.
And, if you want to explore further afield, the beautiful Queenstown Lakes District and Central Otago wine region are only a short drive away.
