The British Council School Madrid is currently seeking to appoint an outstanding professional as specialist Brass Music Teacher to teach on our Class Band Programme in our Primary class groups, based in Madrid and with an immediate start. Individual instrumental lessons may also be available in accordance to sudent demand.

We are offering a part-time, 12.4 weekly hour permanent contract, with an immediate start.

Purpose of the Role
To teach in the school as a member of a team of instrument and music teachers. To teach in a through-school role, across all sections, in all Key Stages, and work as a member of the team ensuring high standards of teaching and learning, as well as being involved in developing high quality schemes of work for students to follow. To teach on our Class Band Programme in our Primary class groups. To support the team in achieving excellent ABRSM and similar external exam results.

Preparing students for External Examinations and performances, in and outside school, is a key purpose of this role.

We are a British 2-18 private coeducational school with approximately 1800 pupils on roll.

Our Somosaguas campus has 3 separate facilities (Early Years, Primary and Secondary) and children start with us at 2 years of age and study with us for 16 years until they graduate at the age of 18:

  • Early Years where approximately 400 pupils from Pre-Nursery to Reception, (age 2 to 5) follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and 130 Year 1 pupils start Key Stage 1. Children also develop their Spanish language skills,
  • Primary where approximately 700 pupils from Year 2 to Year 6 follow the English National Curriculum and the Spanish Language and Culture curriculum.
  • Secondary where approximately 700 pupils from Year 7 to Year 11 follow the English National Curriculum and the Spanish Language and Culture curriculum finishing with IGCSE and International GCSEs in a wide range of subjects and approximately 250 pupils complete their Bi Bac® (Bilingual Baccalaureate). This is our unique Sixth Form programme . Year after year 100% of our students go on to Top World Universities in Spain, UK, US and Europe and in the last few years 50% have opted for overseas and 50% for Spain.

Our teaching staff teach in our modern, purpose built facilities and are supported by a Business Services team who provide them with cutting edge ICT equipment and resources as well as outstanding facilities with a caring and effective administrative support.

Our bespoke, dynamic CPDL programme ensures staff can offer our pupils an excellent overall experience while at the same time staying up to date with UK and other global practices.

  • Classroom Management: Is able to engage all pupils throughout the lesson effectively differentiating the learning of individuals, groups within the whole class setting. Manages learner behaviour by establishing and maintaining a clear positive behaviour framework in the classroom. Promotes critical thinking skills through the use of a range of strategies including effective questioning.
  • Lesson Planning and Assessment: All lessons are purposeful with clear learning outcomes. Demonstrates a clear understanding of assessment principles and is able to plan and incorporate effective assessment procedures to inform future planning. Is able to embed the effective use of ICT in lesson planning.
  • Subject Knowledge and Delivery: Demonstrates excellent subject knowledge and can communicate this effectively. Is able to share knowledge and expertise with others. Is an excellent classroom practitioner.
  • Understanding Your Learners: Is able to identify individual learning needs and implement appropriate strategies. Is able to both support lower ability children and challenge higher ability children. Has knowledge and understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion in teaching.
  • Learning Technologies: Consistently demonstrates a high level of skill in using technology resources appropriately in the classroom, online and for hybrid teaching when required. Is able to integrate technologies into daily classroom delivery. Encourage students to use ICT independently. Uses the School Intranet to provide resources for students to use at home and to share resources with other staff.

2 years experience teaching the required music instrument to individual students, leading groups and preparing students for ABRSM or similar music certifications.
Desirable

  • 5 years experience teaching individual students, leading groups and preparing students for ABRSM or similar music certifications.
  • Experience teaching the YAMAHA system
Language Requirements

Essential

This post requires English and Spanish language ability.

  • First language English/ Spanish to the level of, or a level comparable to, first language communicator (Proficient spoken and written level, minimum C2 CEFR or equivalent).
  • Second language English/ Spanish to the level of, or a level comparable to, independent spoken level (minimum B2 CEFR or equivalent).

Those candidates who do not have a working knowledge of the second language will be required to working towards achieving B2 level by end of first year and will receive support to do so.

Other requirements: There are occasional trips and performances locally and members of staff are required to accompany students. Overseas travel sometimes takes place and staff may be asked to accompany groups. Due to the nature of your role, you may be required to work outside school hours during events and performances.
