We are looking for

An Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor), in physical and surface chemistry who can contribute to the long-term development of the department and primarily to the research and teaching related to water and its interactions with surfaces, polymers and biomolecules.

Work duties

The Department of Biomedical Science intends to recruit an Associate Senior Lecturer in Physical and Surface Chemistry with a strong research foundation in related relevant scientific specialization. The new Associate Senior Lecturer is crucial for our newly started Water Research Initiative (https://mau.se/en/news/large-donation-to-water-research-at-Malmo-University/) and for our ambitions to further integrate research and education. You will be well incorporated into the research activities carried out within the Biofilms Research Centre for Biointerfaces and are expected to further strengthen the link between the department's different research disciplines (which are best described as the interfaces between biology, chemistry, pharmacy, medicine, physics and technology). You have a strong commitment to both research and teaching, as well as the ability to contribute to the department's joint development in the long term.
You are expected to teach in several courses of our Biomedical Surface Science master programme (second cycle, in English). The teaching duties include course coordination, supervision, course administration and various management tasks. Additional tasks include equipment responsibility and acting as a link between national and international researchers and partner industry.

Qualifications

To be eligible for employment as an Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor), the applicant must have a doctoral degree or equivalent scientific competence. All applicants are judged on merit and skill.
In addition to formal competence, the general eligibility requirement is that university employees are suitable for and have the personal abilities otherwise required to perform the duties of the post well and to represent the university in the best possible way.
Specific requirements for this position:

• Ph D in physical chemistry, surface chemistry, colloid chemistry, polymer chemistry, biophysics, physical pharmacy or other relevant discipline
• Strong background in physical chemistry or related discipline
• Research publications in reputable international scientific journals
• Experience from writing competitive external grant applications that have resulted in awarded funding
• Completed postdoctoral employment or postdoctoral stay of at least 3 months at a higher education institution other than the one where you received your doctoral degree

The following would be of benefit for the position:

• Experience in water-related research
• Life science and/or pharmacy related research experience
• Experience of research and teaching in organic and/or analytical chemistry
• Experience of research and teaching in biochemistry and/or biophysics
• Experience of research and teaching in physical and galenic pharmacy
• Experience of research and teaching in molecular modelling
• Experience in surface characterization techniques, calorimetric or water sorption techniques, scattering techniques, other laboratory techniques relevant for surface and colloid chemistry or pharmacy
• Strong software skills, e.g. in MATLAB, molecular modelling software etc.
• Experience of collaboration with national and international research organisations
• Experience of research collaboration with industry and the public sector, with a good understanding of their needs
• Experience in project management

All applicants are judged on merit and skill. Having obtained the doctoral degree no more than five years before the application deadline is considered a merit when assessing overall expertise.

Faculty, Department and Research environment

The Department of Biomedical Science at the Faculty of Health and Society (www.mau.se/bmv) offers education leading to a professional qualification as a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and Biomedical Analyst (both at first-cycle level, 180 credits), and a Master's programme, Biomedical Surface Science (second-cycle level, 120 credits), as well as freestanding courses at first-cycle and second-cycle level. The department operates in the multifaceted meeting between biology, chemistry, pharmacy, medicine, physics and technology, and the interdisciplinary approach to research and education aims to further develop the theoretical and practical understanding of the complex subject. In this interaction between knowledge building and application, our students are out in pharmacies, clinics, hospital laboratories and at companies. Based on the balance between basic and applied research, the department has also been successful in attracting funding from regional, national and international research funders. Our researchers are constantly challenging the boundaries between scientific specialisations, between basic and applied research, and between academia and industry.
The department's research is also connected to the “Biofilms - Research Center for Biointerfaces” (www.mau.se/brcb), which integrates biomedical and surface science with clinical and translational research in pharmaceutical, medical, dental, food, and environmental applications, working closely with regional industry

Miscellaneous

This full-time position as an associate senior lecturer is, with the support of the Higher Education Ordinance, limited in time for 4 years, with the possibility of being promoted to a permanent position as senior lecturer (Associate Professor) if the eligibility requirements are met. It is expected that the Associate Senior Lecturer within the framework of the current employment also achieves the competence required for promotion to Associate Professor (i.e. Swedish Docent).
For promotion to Senior Lecturer (Associate professor)
An Associate Senior Lecturer may apply for promotion to a permanent position as a Senior Lecturer during the period of employment. The assessment is made against the requirements below. If these are met and the person is deemed suitable, promotion must take place.
Swedish is the main language at Malmö University and it is desired that non-Swedish speaking employees eventually acquire enough proficiency in Swedish to be able to participate in the day-to-day work of their department or division.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for employment as a senior lecturer (Associate professor), the applicant must have:

• A doctoral degree or have equivalent scientific competence or other professional expertise that is of importance with regard to the subject content of the position and the duties that will be included in the employment
• Teaching expertise
• Training in teaching and learning in higher education comprising at least 15 credits or equivalent formalised training in teaching and learning in higher education.

Assessment criteria for employment as a senior lecturer

The assessment criteria for employment as a senior lecturer shall be the degree of such expertise that is a requirement for eligibility for employment. The assessment of teaching expertise shall be given the same care as the assessment of other qualifying conditions in accordance with the first paragraph of the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, Section 4.
A Senior Lecturer must be established within their scientific field, taking into account the nature and tradition of the subject specialisation.
A Senior Lecturer must demonstrate:

• Documented competence in the subject
• Documented ability to communicate and collaborate with actors in other parts of society with a clear connection to education and research

Teaching expertise relates to:

• Documented ability to implement and lead education with different teaching methods in higher education with high quality
• Documented experience of pedagogical development work and a reflective account of their own pedagogical outlook and practice
• Documented ability to be research-related to education in terms of both content and pedagogy

Research expertise means

• Documented ability to independently conduct high-quality research
• Research in areas of relevance to current employment
• Active participation in the scientific community
