Job Summary:
Serves as part of a multidisciplinary UW-Madison Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment team, which is providing an electronics system for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) operations. The successful candidate conceptualizes, designs, optimizes, constructs, tests, and improves the unique, large-scale instrumentation system of Advanced Telecommunications Architecture (ATCA) based electronics system based on field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). The candidate will play the role of the lead firmware developer for HL-LHC CMS Trigger Upgrade project covering calorimeter, track-only and correlator triggers using custom ATCA hardware, based on high-end Xilinx FPGAs and Samtec Firefly optics. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development of firmware using 1000s of multi-gigabit serial links (25-Gbps) and high-speed (360 MHz) designs. The candidate will be responsible for development of both core firmware and providing sandbox support for algorithm developers, abstracting out the data-transport and system integrity-checks. Together with the hardware and software developers the candidate will be responsible for providing documentation and training for the algorithm software developers. The candidate will work closely with the hardware development engineer to design the multi-crate, multi-board system, with core firmware considerations taken in to account. The person will also provide testing support in Madison and CERN. The person will be co-responsible for commissioning the full ATCA board system at CERN for operations in the HL-LHC period along with physicists based at CERN.Responsibilities:
Serves as part of a multidisciplinary team, and conceptualizes, designs, optimizes, constructs, tests, and improves unique, large-scale instrumentation systems used in scientific research, including electronics, mechanical/thermal systems, optics, optical detectors, and computers. Uses computer design applications for modeling, sophisticated analysis, including multidiscipline coupling, and optimization of large-scale design and fabrication efforts. Serves as a subject matter expert for technical aspects of the project development and new instrumentation system specifications and designs. Leads research and development of new techniques and approaches.- 20% Serves as part of a multidisciplinary team, and conceptualizes, specifies, designs, constructs, integrates, operates, tests, calibrates, documents, and improves unique, large-scale instrumentation systems
- 20% Provides innovative and strategic expertise and experience in an area of discipline and/or multiple disciplines. Uses universally accepted computer design applications for modeling, sophisticated analysis, including multidiscipline coupling, and optimization of large-scale design and fabrication efforts
- 10% Serves as the main expert point of contact to internal and external stakeholders, leadership, vendors, and peer institutions. Identifies problems, issues and needs, provides solution options, and strategic direction throughout the project development
- 20% Leads research and development of new processes, techniques, and approaches for use in advanced instrumentation systems in collaboration with scientists and other research staff
- 10% Prepares and presents reports of design status and/or technical research to professional organizations, government/sponsor review boards, and design reviews
- 10% Serves as a subject matter expert to researchers, scientists, and faculty on the development of new instrumentation system specifications and designs, and participates in preparation of grant and contract proposals
- 10% Provides training to staff and outside experts on developed systems and related technologies

RequiredMaster's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Qualifications:
- Eight or more years of professional working experience in large-scale instrumentation system of Advanced Telecommunications Architecture (ATCA) based electronics system based on field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) is required.
