Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading
UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and
non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the
benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.
Context:
Background Information
IOM established the Global Data Institute to harness the power of its data for operations,
making meaning of global migration patterns, and providing foresight. The Global Data Institute
capitalizes on synergies between its two units-the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) and the
Global Migration Data Analysis Center (GMDAC)-and collaborates with a network of regional
data specialists to illuminate the global data story of human mobility.
The Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) has been IOM’s main operational tool for tracking and
monitoring the movements and evolving needs of displaced populations since 2004. It has been
systematically deployed in medium to large-scale humanitarian response operations in the last
four years, including in all Level 3 emergencies. As of 2023, DTM was active in 100 countries,
tracking and monitoring over 57 million internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Supervision
Under the overall supervision of the Global DTM Coordinator and direct supervision of the Data
Science Support Officer, the DTM Visualization and Data Management Intern will be responsible
and accountable for providing support to the activities and services provided by DTM support
team in headquarters for DTM implementation in the field worldwide, to support development
and implementation of supplementary and interoperable systems for quality assurance and
further improvement of global DTM data and analysis.
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
Technical
1. Utilization of relevant business intelligent tool for interpreting and analysing raw data into
meaningful information and key findings.
2. Visualizing data, designing, and creating reports for accessibility in compliance with the DTM
standards
3. Provide support to ensure standards in published DTM data on IOM websites, primarily
displacement.iom.int, but may include any other portal as required by operations and global
developments.
4. Implement data quality control mechanisms for DTM operations worldwide as set by the
global standard.
5. Contribute to the implementation and roll out of responsible data mechanisms in DTM
implementation worldwide. This includes the aspect of data governance, data protection, data
security, and ethics in the collection and use of DTM data.
6. Support the development and adaptation of standard operating procedures for DTM field data
collection and management.
7. Support the implementation of global DTM survey, tracking system for DTM operations
worldwide, as well as addressing queries on data collected by DTM field operations, based on
data consolidated in the Central Data Warehouse and any other databases available.
8. Support the development and implementation of Kobo forms to support DTM field operations
worldwide.
9. Perform any other tasks as assigned.
Training Components and Learning Elements
- Gain a thorough understanding of DTM methodologies, forms development and data

- Ability to work under pressure;
- Attention to detail and quality and capacity to meet deadlines; and,
- Proven analytical skills and creative thinking.
IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish. All staff members are required to be
fluent in one of the three languages.
For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of another
official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is an advantage.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process,
which may include written and/or oral assessments.
Note
The intern shall receive a monthly subsistence allowance (MSA).
Eligibility and Selection
In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:
a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM
programmes and activities;
b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for
whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
c) are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in
specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
d) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme
(minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.
e) are at least 20 years old.

The appointment is subject to funding confirmation.
Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment,
accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and background verification and security
clearances. Subject to certain exemptions, vaccination against COVID-19 will in principle be
required for individuals hired on or after 15 November 2021. This will be verified as part of the
medical clearance process.
