We are renowned for clearing landmines, handling unexploded ordnance, educating communities on safety, and building secure arms stores., we now employ over 11,000 staff in 30 countries and territories.HALO Ukraine has been operating since 2016, responding to the humanitarian crisis in the country by delivering humanitarian mine action activities, including survey, mine clearance and explosive ordnance risk education. The programme currently employs over 1200 staff members and is looking now looking for a competent Workshop Manager to enable our efforts.
**Please note that this role is based on-site in Ukraine, and cannot be conducted remotely**
About the role:
This role is part of a project for the development and expansion of a Centre for Innovation in Mechanical Demining in Southern Ukraine. This project includes the running of a workshop which provides equipment support to enable operational teams to deliver humanitarian mine action activities and conduct trials on innovative mechanical clearance equipment and methods.The successful candidate will be accountable for the management of this workshop. They will work closely with the Fleet and Mechanical Clearance departments to manage vehicle maintenance and with the Project Manager, responsible for leading this project.
Key Responsibilities:
Workshop Operations Management- Schedule and manage the maintenance of light vehicles and heavy plant.
- Oversee the conduct and completion of fabrication work conducted for operational and trials teams.
- Develop, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for workshop activities.
- Ensure all workshop activities are completed to a high standard and within designated timeframes.
- Schedule and manage routine maintenance, repair, and calibration (where applicable) of all workshop tooling, equipment, and machinery.
- Ensure facilities, equipment, and machinery are serviceable and fit for purpose, commensurate with the work being conducted.
- Lead and supervise workshop staff, including mechanics, technicians, and support staff.
- Provide training, mentoring, and professional development opportunities to build team capacity.
- Uphold discipline amongst staff, in accordance with HALO’s values and standards.
- Ensure accurate records are kept of the maintenance and fabrication work completed, including spares and consumables used.
- Ensure accurate records are kept and maintained for all workshop tools, equipment, and machinery.
- Ensure inventory levels are accurate to ensure the availability of necessary parts and supplies.
- Forecast the parts and supplies needed to enable future workshop activities.
- Maintain comprehensive records of all workshop activities, including maintenance logs, training records, and safety reports.
- Provide statistics on workshop performance and work progress.
- Ensure all workshop activities comply with the country’s health and safety regulations and organisational policies.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify and mitigate risks.
- Develop and implement emergency response plans for the workshop.
- Ensure staff are trained and prepared to handle emergencies effectively.
- Implement quality control processes to ensure all work meets the required standards.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of workshop activities and staff.
- Coordinate with other departments to ensure project alignment with organizational goals.
- Liaise with other departments to understand their needs and provide effective solutions.
- Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction by delivering quality service and support.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in workshop operations.
- Implement new technologies and practices to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
Requirements
Essential:
- Extensive experience in workshop management and maintenance, particularly with heavy plant machinery.
- Experience in repair and fabrication work.
- Experience in change planning and management.
- Strong leadership and communication skills with experience in managing teams and fostering an inclusive workplace.
- Expertise in training and mentoring staff.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to foster a cooperative work environment.
- Knowledge of safety protocols and asset security measures.
- Fluency in English – at least B2 (upper intermediate) or above.
- Familiarity with CAD software, (Fusion 360, Auto CAD, or Solid Edge).
- Familiarity with humanitarian or NGO operations, particularly in conflict zones.
- Knowledge of using ERP systems for fleet, maintenance, and stores management.
- Local overseas allowance and food allowance
- Shared accommodation in a rented HALO apartment, provided at nil cost
- 49 days annual leave (rising to 56 days after 2 years of service)
- Three economy return flights to the member’s official home address (or an alternative location up to an equivalent cost)
- Comprehensive insurance package: Private Medical Insurance, life assurance and emergency medical insurance, including evacuation and repatriation.
