A CSIRO Ph D Top-Up Scholarship is a supplementary award, which adds to the student’s support from a principal scholarship awarded by another body, e.g. RTP scholarship. In all respects recipients of awards will be regarded as students of the University at which they are registered, and all rules relating to degree candidature and the primary award will apply. In particular, recipients will undertake research at CSIRO as a student of the university concerned and will not be employees of CSIRO.

The Ph D will be a part of the Sea level, Waves, and Remote Sensing team of the CSIRO Environment. The team investigates changes in sea level, waves, and other coastal extremes and how these can be predicted into the future through a range of techniques using data from numerical models, instruments deployed in the ocean, and satellite remote sensing. Project Title: Advancing Satellite Remote Sensing of Ocean Surfaces

Project Details
This research will connect new satellite measurement techniques with enriched in-situ ocean observations to develop new and improved algorithms for extracting useful and accurate ocean surface properties (such as ocean wave heights, surface winds, and currents etc.) from new satellite missions. With advancements in satellite remote sensing technology, and an increase in the number of missions and in-situ deployed instruments, there is a growing number of new and diverse ocean observations available, whose relationships are not fully understood, and benefits not fully exploited. This opportunity will make use of emerging data science and machine learning approaches informed by physical and empirical understanding of the remote sensing of the ocean surface to extract more valuable ocean properties using data from satellites, in-situ measurements, and numerical models. The improved ocean surface properties will help in better monitoring and prediction of ocean conditions for a variety of marine applications such as situational awareness, marine operations, and coastal impacts.

Scholarship: Top-Up Scholarship of $10,000 per annum, plus a learning and development budget of $5,000 over the term of the studentship

Eligibility:

To be eligible to apply you must have (or expect to gain):

• first or upper second-class honours or equivalent in a relevant research area;
• admission to an Australian University as a Ph D student;
• hold an appropriate visa to study in Australia (if international)*
• be no further than one year (FTE) into a Ph D on commencing at CSIRO
• hold a primary scholarship; for example, a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or other primary scholarship of similar value
• not be in receipt of any other Top-Up Scholarship
• a university supervisor who is willing and able to supervise you; and
• be available to commence with CSIRO no later than 30 June 2025.

• International applicants must be residing in Australia and have the appropriate immigration approvals to allow them to take up the scholarship.

The successful applicant will be required to obtain and provide a National Police Check or equivalent.
